GATEWAYS ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: MEET MAXINE FAITH VERA CRUZ ScM ‘21!!!
Maxine was born in the Philippines and grew up in Los Angeles County. She is a double (whoa) UCLA grad, first earning her BS in 2017, majoring in Physiological Science. As an undergrad, Maxine studied Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in the UCLA Tidball Research Lab & worked as a barista on campus. Given her passion for science and teaching, Maxine pursued an MS in Physiological Science at UCLA, continuing to expand her research skills and studying a stem-cell mediated therapeutic strategy for DMD. Maxine also fine-tuned her teaching skills, acting as a TA for several anatomy & physiology courses. In 2019, she was notably awarded the UCLA Departmental Distinguished TA Award. Maxine fueled her longstanding interest in a career as a physician caring for vulnerable patient populations by volunteering at California Hospital Medical Center & a homeless shelter for veterans, where she led a team of volunteer cooks. Maxine graduated UCLA w/ her 2nd degree in 2020 & then joined Gateways (for her 2nd master’s degree!). During her gap year, Maxine has worked in clinical research through the Miriam Hospital’s Immunology & Infectious Diseases Department. She has also been integrally involved with our ‘22 class as an Adjunct Instructor for our biomedical science team-based learning sessions and helped establish our Big Sibling alumni mentorship program along with her fellow classmates. (Fun Fact: Maxine is an exceptional baker, putting Barefoot Contessa to shame & often provided sweets for our Gateways team this year - I mean those choc chip cookies though!). We will truly miss Maxine as she heads back to the West Coast to the University of Washington School of Medicine to pursue her MD (along with her fellow ‘21 alum who is an M1!). CONGRATS Maxine - we are so proud of you! 🐻 💉 🍪

GATEWAYS STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: MEET JESSICA OROFINO, ScM ‘22!!
Jessica is a local New Englander from Sudbury, MA! Upon graduating high school, Jessica earned her certification as an EMT, beginning her journey with medicine and hands-on patient care that she carried through her undergraduate studies at Muhlenberg College in PA. She served as First Lieutenant, President & Secretary of her campus EMS organization & continued to work as an EMT, even on school breaks. Jessica completed a pre-med observationship during junior year at St. Luke’s Hospital in Allentown, PA which served as a formative experience for her. Jessica received a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience in 2021. She chose to concentrate in neuroscience based on her love for both biology & philosophy, applying these towards thinking about life abstractly. Through Muhlenberg’s chemistry and neuroscience departments, Jessica was able to conduct meaningful research; designing a research project on the synthesis of gold nanoparticles utilizing food waste, and assisting in a GABAa receptor laboratory looking into the interactions of passionflower extract and how this may be used to create safer pharmaceuticals. In 2020 (right before the pandemic), Jessica studied abroad in Florence, Italy at the University of the Arts learning about art and culture ingrained in the city (Fun Fact: Jessica grows spider plants from seedlings and is super creative, doing a lot of art and enjoys building things!). Additionally, as part of Muhlenberg’s RJ fellows Honors Program, Jessica was introduced to working with underserved communities, which motivated her to want to continue this work in medicine. While in Gateways, Jessica participated in our SexEd by Brown Med program, teaching w/ fellow AMS students at the Calcutt Middle School in Central Falls, RI. She will be staying in her home state of MA for medical school, attending the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School this summer! CONGRATS Jessica! We are so proud of you!! 💉 🐻

Sabrina was born in Austin, TX and grew up in a suburb north of the city called Georgetown. She attended Trinity University where she played soccer and ran track, graduating in 2020 with a B.S. in Neuroscience. Sabrina’s undergraduate research included studying oxytocin’s attenuating effects on contextual fear conditioning (hopefully submitting her manuscript for publication this year!). She was also highly involved in her SPURS sorority while in college, serving as Vice President junior/senior years. Sabrina is passionate about fighting against food insecurity & while at Trinity, she volunteered w/the San Antonio Food Bank & Wheels on Meals, which she also continued volunteering w/ in RI & back home in Austin. While in Gateways, Sabrina enjoyed exploring New England & her SoCal roomie even taught her to surf at our RI beaches (just a tad colder than TX/CA …) After graduating from Brown, Sabrina moved from the smallest state back to the biggest, and has been working in Austin as a medical assistant @ an ENT clinic. Sabrina feels so lucky to have gotten to know & help take care of the patient population in Austin, her home. Fun Fact: Sabrina loves traveling & learning about different cultures. She lived in Denmark for 3mos & the most unique place she’s ever been is the remote Faroe Islands.
