DOCUMENTARY WITH KAREN ALLEN AND BRIAN COX TO SCREEN ON RHODE ISLAND WSBE PUBLIC TELEVISION IN JUNE, 2024.
***Shot on location throughout Scotland and the United States, Voices Over the Water looks at Scottish Immigration to the U.S.***
(Providence, RI, May, 2024) . . . A new documentary by filmmakers Guy Perrotta & Jane Ferguson will air on Rhode Island PBS WSBE on June 7, 2024, at 12PM, and June 8 at 5PM. A presentation by WNED PBS, distributed through American Public Television, Voices Over the Water explores the struggles and triumphs of Scottish immigrants to the U.S.
Who were the Scottish Highland people, and why did so many of them leave? This program looks at the colorful and romantic image of Scotland, and at what lies behind it--the real history, the culture, the tragedies and opportunities. Voices Over the Water follows the story of Highland emigrants as they arrive in America, speaking a different language with distinctive dress and culture, and explores their contribution to America, and how their culture is celebrated today.
Karen Allen, known for her roles in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Starman, and other feature films, narrates the documentary. Also featured are 2023 EMMY® Award-nominated actor Brian Cox and music by the GRAMMY and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet-musician Rhiannon Giddens, and EMMY® Award winner Charles David Denler. "As admirers of Scottish culture and big fans of the artistry of Karen Allen, we at the Rhode Island Film & Television Office are very much looking forward to the release of this PBS special" said Steven Feinberg, the Executive Director of the film office. The St. Andrews Society of Rhode Island celebrated its 100 year anniversary last fall and members plan to hold watch-parties for the upcoming PBS broadcasts.
This film includes images from the Rhode Island Scottish Highland Festival, residents of Rhode Island and nearby Connecticut who performed with the Mystic Scottish Country Dancers. As the filmmakers have noted, there were a large number of Scottish immigrants working in quarries and textile mills in places such as Central Falls and Pawtucket. John McNiff, Warwick native and former Park Ranger of the Roger Williams National Memorial, said, "My great-great grandmother was from Paisley (Glasgow, Scotland) and settled in Providence. She was looked down upon for her way of speaking." The story of McNiff's ancestor seems to correspond with that of Aonghas MacAoidh, a 19th-century Scottish Gaelic resident of Providence who empathized with the plight of the area’s Native inhabitants.
Producer Jane Ferguson says, “A goal of ours: to shed light on some of the tragedies that led so many people to leave Scotland and settle in places such as Rhode Island. Producer Guy Perrotta says that “Participation from scholars and members of the worldwide Scottish diaspora have really added to the texture of the documentary.” The Directors Guild Theater in New York City was the setting for a special screening for participants. Film reviewer Stephanie Zacharek moderated a Q&A session afterwards to a near-capacity audience, and described it as “… delightful, fun, well-paced! And I learned a lot.”
About the producers: Guy Perrotta is a member of the Directors Guild of America and the Explorers Club, and has received awards from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Jane Ferguson has worked in film and television on such varied projects as Law & Order, 30 Rock, A Call to Spy, Manifest, A Beautiful Mind, National Treasure, amongst many others.

LOCAL FILMMAKER WRITES SURREALIST SHORT FILM BASED ON GRIEF DREAMS AFTER LOSING HIS MOTHER TO CHRONIC ILLNESS.
Rhode Island-based filmmaker Nathan David Walker is raising funds for his upcoming short film, Til I Rot, with a Seed & Spark campaign running May 1 - 30, 2024. In Til I Rot, a Dreamer must
journey through realms of perception in order to confront past trauma and escape the prison within his mind.
Til I Rot is a movie about a man's attempt to reconcile his feelings about his traumatic upbringing. Walker conceptualized and wrote this film after his mother passed away. Her untimely death brought about a series of increasingly intense dreams that he eventually
realized had a poignant thematic tether. Til I Rot explores the difficult themes of poverty, depression, addiction, and generational trauma. Blending surrealist horror and suspense, the
film allows each viewer to interpret these themes through their own unique lens. The story is at once both universal and deeply personal. Nathan David Walker is a photographer and filmmaker based in Rhode Island. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Digital Cinematography from Full Sail University and has worked in the film and television industry as a production assistant, assistant camera, and camera operator. While his passion is writing and directing, he also loves to be behind the camera in any capacity. He
works as a real estate photographer and multimedia specialist and also provides videography and photography for weddings and other special events.
The Seed & Spark campaign launched on May 1st, giving patrons thirty days to help fund this
project. Donations of all sizes are welcomed, and incentive prizes are offered for the higher levels of donation. You can find the campaign on SeedAndSpark.com at the following link:
