Utah Valley Oasis - A Community of Good

https://www.facebook.com/groups/uvoasis/

We're a community in the heart of Utah Valley dedicated to social interaction, intellectual exploration and humanitarian service, hoping to build a sense of community outside of religious affiliation.

10/11/2024

If you are looking for ways to serve this weekend, Salt Lake Oasis is doing the following project and said they would be happy to have more volunteers join.

Holding Out Help - Fall Cleanup
Assistance for those leaving polygamous cultures

Saturday, October 12, 2024
10:00 am to 12:00 pm
748 Pioneer Rd, Draper, UT 84020

Volunteers are encouraged, but not required, to bring work gloves, yard tools (such as bags for weeds, clippers, shovels, trowels, rakes), and pre-packaged snacks to donate.

There won't be a Utah Valley Oasis meeting this week, May 21st. We would like to throw all of our efforts towards UVPM's anniversary party instead. We are also canceling on June 4th, since that is the day of the SLC pride parade. We are going to look into doing some joint summer potlucks with UVPM, since we typically do not have high attendance at summer speaker meetings but park potlucks are well-attended.

We will still do our regular food service at the Food and Care Coalition in June, and then re-evaluate whether we keep going or stay on hiatus after summer is over. That will largely depend on whether there are folks who want to take over leadership of the group. The current leadership can be in supporting roles, but will not have the time to continue their involvement like they have in the past.

I am doing a blanket drive for the unsheltered in Utah County. If you have a new or gently used blanket or sleeping bag that you would like to donate, they can be dropped off on my porch at 2546 Elm Dr. Lehi, or at our Oasis meeting this Sunday.

I will be delivering these weekly to The Genesis Project in Provo. They hold movie nights for the unsheltered in the winter to help keep them from freezing to death at night.

I will also be ordering more fleece blankets from Amazon. I found a good price here:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BBXD9ZFW/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_1?smid=A2PTHBB1L5V9A&th=1
If you want to donate financially, I will get these ordered and delivered.

Updated to add: Follow-up bad news: I guess Provo Pride got cancelled. :(

Good news! Provo Pride is back to being an in-person event! Also, Utah Valley Oasis will be there! Come check out the festival and stop by. It is always a family-friendly event.

Also, if anybody wants to help work at the booth, that would be welcome.

A brief update on the Sub for Santa for the 7 families and 13 children we adopted.

All gifts have been delivered. One of the mothers of a 9 month old already expressed her gratitude for the warm clothes as she did not own a jacket for the baby and when it snowed last week she was able to pull out the one she received and used it to keep her baby warm.

These children will all be warm, and blessed with books and toys thanks to you and all of your help.

12/01/2020

It's giving Tuesday. Help us support local families in need. We have adopted 7 families. Their children mostly need clothes. Please see the attached Amazon Wish List for examples. The items do not have to come from Amazon. If you find things elsewhere or have things to donate please contact Helen Guy Porter to coordinate.

Thank you for your generosity.

Amazon Custom Gift List

11/10/2020

It is the season of giving. This year we have combined with Salt Lake and Norther Wasatch Oasis groups. We are adopting families in poverty with children. So far our goal is to help 8 families. We are providing something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read.
Most of what they need is clothing. I have created a registry on Amazon. If you purchase off this list you can select to have it shipped directly to me, Helen Porter. The goal is to have everything in hand by Dec 12.

If you would like to help another way you can provide gift cards, Amazon or Walmart are the most helpful. You can also send clothes or drop them off to me from another source.

Thank you for all of your support for those hurting in our community.

As we combine Salt Lake and Utah Valley's online Sunday gathering efforts, one thing we want to do is having a community moment from each group, alternating each week. This would be a short introduction of who you are. (including your family, if applicable) Then, if you'd like, something interesting about you, or any thoughts or ideas you have that you'd like to share with the group.

We really want to foster an increase in togetherness of all secular community here in Utah. Especially as it is hard to physically meet in person right now.

Is there anybody reading this, who would volunteer to do this on this Sunday, September 6th? Or for September 20th?

08/22/2020

I need 4 more people to help out tomorrow at the Provo Food and Care Coalition. We will be serving our homeless population. If you are well and not in a high risk group please consider coming from 11:30-2. It is a great event.

Healthy Relationships: Intentionally Investing — Utah Valley Oasis - A Community of Good 08/18/2020

The video for Sunday's meeting is now available at: https://uvoasis.com/events/2020/8/16/healthy-relationships-intentionally-investing

Also, note: We announced at the meeting that we will be merging our online-only Sunday gathering efforts with Salt Lake Oasis as of August 30th, with a new meeting time of 11:00 a.m. Related: in an effort to help our two communities to get better acquainted, we are asking for people from our group to present Community Moments every other meeting (starting September 6th.) Any volunteers?

Healthy Relationships: Intentionally Investing — Utah Valley Oasis - A Community of Good Meg Griffes will present this month’s topic and cover how our relationships impact our lives, why that matters, and what professionals recommend we do about it.
