Puyallup High School Alumni Association

The primary mission of the PHS Alumni Association is to provide scholarships to graduating seniors. Membership in the PHS Alumni Association is free!

The Puyallup Alumni Association was formed in 1992 from members of the Puyallup Centennial Committee. After 18-months of planning, the group hosted its first Alumni Fundraiser (dinner/dance), which witnessed 200 attendees and raised a little money to be put toward scholarships for PHS graduates. The event was well-received and there was clear demand for an encore. The Dinner/Dance was repeated the

The PHS Alumni Association has a focus on providing scholarships to PHS grads who pursue Trade Schools or Community College. While we applaud ALL who further their education, we feel that there is a great shortage of skilled workers in a wide variety of trades and crafts. This year we are pleased to provide $2500 scholarships to each of the following students:

Jayson Schweim - will attend Oregon Coast Culinary Institute
Evelyn Aho - will attend Pierce College to study Nursing/Health
Siro Karori - will attend Pierce College to study Informatics

We congratulate these recipients and wish them great success in their continued education and careers!

If you want to help us fund more scholarships such as these, please attend our 8/11/24 Party and Fundraiser at the Cockrell Cider Farm (see post below or email us at [email protected]).⬇️

We would like to express our appreciation to all PHS Alumni who were able to attend yesterday’s historic 100th Annual Alumni Assembly! We were fortunate enough to have Mike & Chris Egan as emcees and they really helped to rally the crowd, while duly honoring our heritage, our veterans, and past educators and staff. We would also like to thank all of the PHS staff and students who made this event a huge success; we couldn’t have done it without you!

As many of you are aware, we made a change to the start time for this year’s assembly and we want to know your opinions regarding that change and regarding a few more topics. In order to do that, the short survey below was created. If you haven’t already done so, please take a couple of minutes to help shape our future Alumni Assemblies. Even if you were only there in spirit, we very much want your voice to be heard.

We had amazing food from My 4 Sons, awesome music by Billy Shew & Co., a lot of fun with the games, and a fabulous venue at Cockrell Hard Cider! We haven’t tallied things up yet but we are confident we were quite successful! Thank you also to all of those who contributed auction and raffle items!
As always, a special thank you to all of our volunteers who made today’s event possible!

In case anyone attending today’s Alumni Assembly is wondering why the Alumni Association scholarships were not awarded, it’s because we have moved our awards schedule to May, falling in synch with the many other scholarships that are awarded. This helps the school staff and our Alumni Association volunteers alike.

The Alumni Association is proud of our history in awarding scholarships over the past 30 years. We sincerely hope that our efforts and financial assistance have helped graduating seniors achieve their goals as they headed off to college.

Update:
With input from our committee, parents and members of the community, we have changed our focus regarding awarding scholarships. While academic excellence is commendable, we believe that there are a plethora of options already available to honor roll students. We feel that we need to change our focus to recognize and assist those students who are not college-bound and want instead to target vocational, technical, skills-based training.

With this in mind, our scholarships will be awarded to candidates who are seeking careers that do not necessarily require 4-year (or higher) degrees. We will select from students who want to pursue construction trades (electrician, carpenter, plumber, welder, HVAC Tecnician, etc.), specialty schools (truck driving, marine jobs, auto body, mechanics, cosmetology, culinary, graphic artists, medical technicians, information technology and many more! ). Our country has a significant shortage of candidates to fill these type of roles, creating great opportunity!

We seek applicants for multiple 2023 scholarships that we intend to award to students who are looking for a more hands-on career path. Aptitude and references are valued higher than GPAs. Community College is another option for these scholarships as well. Interested students should inquire with the Scholarship Coordinator in Student Services. Look for our very subjective criteria in the packets coming out in February!
