Eco-Justice Center
The Eco-Justice Center is a 15 acre environmental education center and organic farm.
As one of five sponsored ministries of the Racine Dominicans, Eco-J offers programming for lifelong learning designed to encourage exploration, connect people with sustainable growing practices, and promote healthier ecosystems that restore right relationships. Our programs encourage participants of all ages, faiths, races and socio-economic backgrounds to learn from the wisdom of Nature.

Happy first official day of summer! The marks the official beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, occurring when Earth arrives at the point in its orbit where the North Pole is at its maximum tilt toward the Sun, resulting in the longest day and shortest night of the calendar year. Have a joyous solstice!

It is with great sadness that we share that Patch, our beloved farm cat, passed unexpectedly this month due to quickly progressing liver failure. Patch was a sweet cat who loved sitting in on staff meetings, hanging around at lunch time, hunting for mice, and wandering the grounds on warm summer days. He was a favorite of staff, volunteers, and many of EJC's visitors.
In honor of Patch's love of a good shady napping spot, we'd like to share part of this poem by former poet laureate of Milwaukee, Antler (modified):
I want to lie down in dappled leaf-shade,
In quivering shadows of quivering leaves-
be they oak, be they maple,
be they elm or birch,
I want to rest in the play of shadows,
over my reclining form...
Soothed off to sleep
feeling the gentle breeze,
Looking up at the rustling
sun-drenched crown.
Rest easy little Patch 🩷

It’s belly bath season! 💦 ☀️ 🦙 Our alpacas are sheared once a year usually in late May. The last few months before their hair cuts, we are especially diligent in keeping the boys cool. With their fiber at its longest, even mildly warm spring days like today can make them a bit uncomfortable.
Belly baths help alpacas cool down and all our boys are very big fans! During a belly bath, we spray down the inside of the alpaca’s legs and their belly where they have the least amount of hair. As the water evaporates off their skin, the alpacas experience a cooling effect similar to the sensation of sweat evaporating off of your skin on a hot day. 🌤️
Stop by this month to see our boys at their fluffiest before they’re sheared at the end of May! We’re currently open for free to the public from 8am-4pm everyday of the week!
Come visit our Barred Rock beauties and their Americana friends 🐓 this Saturday and pick up your farm fresh eggs while you're here! Eggs will be available while supplies last, starting at 9am on Saturday for $4.50 a dozen. 🎁Gift shop will also be open from 12-1pm Saturday as well!
