Change over from June to July brought us to recognize the 4th of July and military presence in the Racine 4th of July parades.
There was such a great volunteer crew helping with the June turnover, I think they deserve some recognition. Not pictured....me, Gayle, behind the photos!
The change over for June was very active and intense. For the month of June, we are showcasing Women's Military month. In 1948, June 12, was the Women's Armed Services Integration Act. Army 249th birthday on June 14. The Merchant Marines were commissioned June 5, 1920. And finally, but so important, is the recognition of D-Day, June 6, the 80th anniversary.
A.O.G. people! May change over done. Notables for May: Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day with poppy remembrance, and Victory in Europe, WWII.
I hope you have had the chance to view April's exhibits. We will only be changing the middle showcase, so you will have one more month to view the current exhibits, plus the new one for the center case.
March...way too soon we will say goodbye to Woman's history month (Easter ends the month). We recognized these notable Racine women veterans: (apologies if I missed anyone)
There is still time to see the February display for Black History month. We have showcased the following Racine Veterans: Robert Turner, USAF; Ellis Cotton, 93rd Infantry Division, Army; Francis Hightower Reed (nee:Jones), Army; Logan Davis, Union Army soldier
December brings to us memories of December 7, the day that will live in Infamy with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. We pay tribute to those who served. Noted are Robert Navartril, Battle of the Bulge, Frank Anderson, pacific theater, POW, and Charles Schweitzer, pacific theater. We are also paying tribute to Racine veterans from the Civil War to the war on terror through the OOHP play, Seven Sacrifices based on stories of Racine's veterans. Play runs from January 19-28, 6th Street Theater
This flag is still MIA. Return will be so appreciated...no questions asked. PS: also missing are three pictures from the USS Racine exhibit. If they fell off wall and broke...we still want them back or info on what happened to them. See comments
This flag is missing from the September museum display. Please return to Vets Center, no questions asked.
Change over for November is in the books. November remembrance is about Armistice/Veteran's Day, November 11. Marine Corps birthday, November 10. The 1st Armistice day was November 11, 1918. The story of Racine native Lt Edmund R. Collins, KIA, after Armistice was signed. We are also advertising for the January opening of "Seven Sacrifices" at 6th Street theater. The story of Racine veterans that illustrates the sacrifices of service, from the Civil War to the Global War on Terror.
The October display showcases Racine native Frank R. Anderson, USMC. He served for 20 years. He was stationed in Guam and was captured by the Japanese and spent 3 1/2 yrs, 1942-1945, as a POW.
September is remembered for 9/11. Patriots Day is a reminder of that day and those who lost, and continue to lose, there lives. It is also the month WW2 was officially over when Japan surrendered. We take note of the founding of Gold Star mothers and the lose of there child serving overseas. We pay respect to William James Gursky, Jr, Army,a Racine native who served with the 33rd infantry from 1942-1946. As well as Racine native Charles Richard Schweitzer, Navy. He served from 1942-1945 and served aboard the USS Ashland (LSD-1). Our final tribute was to Air Force Racine native who served as a Bombardier, 488th Squadron. He served from 1944-1945
This flag is missing from the September museum display. Please return to Vets Center, no questions asked.

July, we remember the forgotten heroes of the Korean War. The displays of Women Veterans are those who served during Korea. Although some may have not served in County, we know where we served was always where we were needed. We also celebrate our independence through the July 4 parade festivities.
A mite late, but June celebrates women veterans. The WAC's and the US Army were both established in the month of June.
Middle case now reflects VE Day, Victory over Europe, Armed Forces day celebrating all branches of service, and Memorial Day honoring those who made the Supreme sacrifice.
This month's posting is to add detail to existing display for our Gulf war vets, Vietnam Vets and the Wisconsin losses. We add info on the Racine Light Guard and militia. We are also highlighting the loss of a brother, Steve Klinkhammer. And his many, many years of service to the veterans community. He will be missed.
We have added Vietnam to the displays. Stop down and see who is being showcased for March.
Change over at Vets Center museum cases. January ends February begins and we recognize and honor the global war on terror and veterans of Middle Eastern conflicts. Featured are: Racine area: Patton, Weisman and Bowma
