The remote Devils River in southwestern Texas is considered the Lone Star State’s most pristine waterway, and it gets its name from the stark and inhospitable landscape through which it flows. Lined by pecan, sycamore and live oak trees, the Devils features blue lagoons and spring-fed pools that just might inspire a leap from an overhanging branch.

The conditions can be extreme—blazing daytime temperatures, followed by chilly evenings—which makes it a great place to put Orvis technical apparel through its paces. We traveled to this unspoiled gem with Alvin Dedeaux and the crew from All Water Guides in Austin for a three-day adventure that involved floating, fishing for the river’s stunning bass, and hiking the surrounding rocky terrain.

3 Tips to Keep Your Dog Cool

Dehydration, overheating, and heat stroke can occur quickly in dogs, making some of our favorite summer activities quite dangerous. Heat stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when your dog’s body can no longer cool itself using normal mechanisms due to the high external temperatures. When your dog’s body is over 104 degrees, it is a major medical emergency, and you need to seek veterinary care as heat stroke can result in multiple organ failure and even death.
According to Dr. Madeline Fellin—a small-animal veterinarian in Butte, Montana— it’s important to keep three things in mind when adventuring with your dogs in the heat: break, shade, and water.

1. Offer Water Frequently
Make sure you have plenty of water to keep your dog hydrated and stay cool. Offer them cool water frequently to avoid dehydration and overheating.

2. Take Breaks
While adventuring, take intermittent breaks to let your dog catch their breath. If you’re off-leash adventuring, bring a leash in your pack so you can have your dog walk alongside you to take breaks from running and prevent overheating. Avoid walking your dog on the pavement in the summer; the temperature of the pavement can heat up quickly and burn their paw pads.

3. Find Shade or Swim
If your dog has a thick and/or dark coat, they are going to heat up quickly and be prone to dehydration and overheating. As you explore, take time to escape direct sunlight and let your dog cool off in the shade or water. If they choose to swim, make sure it is in moving water as shallow stagnant water poses a risk for blue-green algae that is toxic to dogs.

Born and raised in Dillingham, near the mouth of the Wood River, Triston Chaney’s deep connection to Bristol Bay and its salmon is in his blood. Of Yu’pik and Athabaskan descent, he grew up in a family of commercial fishermen who also loved spending time exploring the wilderness with a fishing rod or rifle in hand.

As a high schooler, Triston participated in the famed Bristol Bay Fly Fishing & Guide Academy, which helps local youths explore career opportunities in the sport-fishing industry. Now, in his early 20s, Triston helps teach younger kids at the Academy every summer.

But his favorite thing to do is to guide fly fishers from around the world and introduce them to his home.

“There’s nothing better than when you guide somebody who can really appreciate the area, especially clients who haven't experienced Alaska before,” he says. “It’s great to see a person transformed by spending a day on the water in such an amazing place, surrounded by bears and catching trout bigger than they’ve ever seen.”

One of the beauties of fly-fishing in truly remote waters is that the fish are rarely wary or picky. Getting to this wild, pristine river in the Northwest Territories takes some doing. First, you leave Scott Lake Lodge to get dropped off by a float plane at a lake, with no one else around for miles. A quick boat ride brings you to the mouth of a wild northern river, followed by a quick upstream hike that offers tempting glimpses of the river through the trees. When you arrive at the first pool, it’s grayling time—casting a hopper or Elk-Hair Caddis to tempt an arctic sailfish to the surface. If you use a dry-dropper rig, it’s not uncommon to catch two grayling at once. Greedy eats, acrobatic jumps, and the almost surreal iridescent colors, when the fish hit the net, are what make the grayling experience so incredible. The chance to hook fish up to 22 inches is just the icing on the cake.

For anglers around the world, the name “Bristol Bay” evokes visions of remote, boundless wilderness and legendary rivers full of salmon and trout. The world’s largest runs of wild sockeye salmon support a fragile, diverse ecosystem that includes brown bears, bald eagles, and massive herds of caribou, as well as an indigenous culture that has inhabited the region for thousands of years.
Isolated fishing lodges sprinkled across the landscape make it possible for fly fishers to travel by floatplane or boat to explore wide, braided rivers and small tributaries in search of huge rainbow trout, arctic char, and five species of salmon amid spectacular scenery.
Guide Triston Chaney has witnessed first-hand the profound effects a trip to the region can have on a person.
“It’s great to see a person transformed by spending a day on the water in such an amazing place, surrounded by bears and catching trout bigger than they’ve ever seen.”
