Back again with Sailor Sunday! Meet ETN1 Goodwin 🧑🏼‍🔬

“I arrived at NC State after serving onboard the USS John Warner (SSN-785), stationed in Norfolk, VA. During my time onboard, I completed two deployments, and enjoyed port calls in some of the most beautiful places in the world, to include Norway and Spain. I spent 3 years attached to the boat and only look back on the memories I made as the best I’ve yet to experience.

I was drawn to NC State for their impressive nuclear engineering program. This gave me the opportunity to pursue my passion under the instucion of world class professors and staff.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, making mead, and reading about advancements in the world of nuclear energy.”

Happy Sailor Sunday! Meet MMN1 Forero - she is an active duty student and is an officer candidate in the Seaman to Admiral-21 program

“ I was born in Colombia, and came to the US at the age of 5. I always knew I wanted to serve the country that gave me opportunity. I chose to go into the Nuclear program because of the job opportunities that I would be able to have when I got out.

I chose NC State because of their great engineering program and because it was a halfway point between my family and my husband’s family.

In my spare time I like to paddleboard, chase waterfalls, and do spartan races.”

Summer cruises are underway, and MIDN 2/C Brynn Elliot has a lot to share about her experience this summer:

“Hi there! My name is MIDN 2/C Brynn Elliott, and I had the fantastic opportunity to have my 2/C Summer Cruise in Souda Bay, Greece! I was on the USS Roosevelt (DDG-80), which is based in Rota, Spain.

During this cruise, MIDN are assigned an enlisted running mate who stands watch with them, completes tasks, works on maintenance, and learns what it is like to be in the Navy. For me, specifically, I was in one of the Engineering Departments, Auxiliary (A-Gang). I learned how to maintain all the systems that make a ship habitable, from retaining the fuel and keeping the drinking water flowing to ensuring the lights and heat stay on.

Being underway, I was able to fire the M2 0.50-Caliber Machine Gun, dress in firefighting gear for a GQ drill (general quarters), and ride in the rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB). Next, I got to experience Flight Quarters with the MH-60R, see the maintenance involved, and talk to the pilots. Each day involved officer training that I could listen to and deepen my knowledge of the SWO life. During the UNREP with the USNS Patuxent, the other MIDN and I were able to be the CONN and tell the officers on the bridge what speed or course we needed to adjust to!

I am beyond grateful for this opportunity and I am looking forward for my next cruise!”

For MIDN Monday/Marine Option Monday we have 1/C Hayley L Lavoie majoring in Sport Management!

She'll be going to The Basic School for 8 months where she will receive her MOS at the end.

She grew up in Hillsborough, NC. She wanted to join the USMC because she wanted to lead others in the right direction.

" I love to travel, spend time with my dogs, and read. My favorite memory from my time at NC State was seeing my friends and family on graduation day at OCS. It meant a lot to me that they made the trip all the way there and sat through a long, hot ceremony just for a hug from me (they were top tier hugs)."

WELCOME TO ! Where we will post another 1/C per week until a week out from commissioning, when we'll be posting memory pictures from the senior's last semester!
To start off we have our Administration Officer: MIDN 1/C Zayne Perkins studying Biological Oceanography!
"I wanted to join the Navy to become a leader and have the ability to be a positive influence on others lives."
Why NC State? " I chose to become a midshipman at NC State because when I moved to NC, I instantly loved NC State's campus and sports. My favorite ROTC memory is definitely the friends that I have made in the battalion, but more specifically the bonds that formed starting at CORTRAMID in San Diego, CA."
Recommendations for future midshipmen: "I to capitalize on any opportunities you may encounter, especially through the university and other organizations."

!
Officer Candidate Ethan Watson!
Major: Civil Engineering

OC Watson comes from the Navy Nuclear
Community. "It is a community like no other. I have very much appreciated the tight knit connections this community caters. I remember first showing up in Charleston being surrounded by people that I was not used to hanging around. Being used to construction workers, farmers, and college students, I found a very different dynamic associated with the nuke community. A comradery that has been there from the very start. We have each other's backs and I couldn't be any happier about that thought."

Why did you apply to STA-21: "When I joined the navy, I knew nothing about how the whole thing works. It wasn't until after I was in for about 3 months that I had heard about this STA-21 program. At first I was not interested because I joined the navy to get out of college debt and stress, but I was told I would be a good candidate and that I could do it...and now here I am."

Why did you choose NCSU: "I actually was originally going to be sent to KSU, but I requested an orders-modification to attend NCSU. I wanted to come here at first just because it was closer to my family because they are all in Statesville (where I grew up). Now I'm happy I came here because of all the great friends I made and how awesome this school actually is."

Free time activities: "I do a lot in my free time. I can range from building things to spending time with the family to going on motorcycle rides with my brother and riding friends. I fish and hunt too. Besides being in the dad club, I am in the sub club. I have learned a lot about submarine warfare in this club! I love it!"

His previous command before coming to NCSU was USS Nimitz where he was the LPO of RC02!

We asked him we he chose the Nuclear community: "From my experience, the Nuke community is filled with people who like to challenge themselves and strive to be the best at what they do. This would range from performing maintenance, standing watch, and general knowledge about how the reactor plant worked."

Why Seaman-to-Admiral-21 program?: "I knew that I wanted to make a career out of the Navy and the best way to do so was being an officer"

Why NC State?: "I wanted to attend NC State before I joined the Navy"

During his free time he likes to fish, spend time with friends, and work out!

Why NCSU: "I chose NC State because of the reputation that it’s engineering program has and the opportunities it has to offer."

For this week's we have Officer Candidate (OC) EMN1 Kellen Kloss! He is a Senior majoring in Electrical Engineering (Renewable Electrical Energy Systems).

OC Kloss reported to NCSU following an instructor tour at the Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU), in Charleston, SC. "After serving as a Nuclear Electrician, I decided that the Navy would make for a fitting career, and wanted to expand my impact upon it through commission."

Favorite memory of the Navy: "Early one morning, in the final hour of a long and taxing night shift at NPTU, I was tasked to take station on top of the aft hatch to observe pumping waste oil from the boat. Exhausted, I dragged myself up the ladder, plugged in my sound-powered phones, and began taking communications and watching the waste oil hose carefully for stray drippage. While I watched, I thought about the long and difficult week I had, and how nice it would be to take a few days off. After what felt like eternity, all the waste oil was transferred and my watch secured. As I put away my phones, the sun just broke over the water. In the first red light of the new day, a pod of dolphins came up to the boat and began to broach and splash around, just off the starboard quarter. I stood there and watched the dolphins playing until the next shift arrived to relieve the watch. Something about that moment reignited my excitement for my job, and I have been excited for every day of work since."

Why do we have active duty enlisted sailors at NC State ROTC? As mentioned in a previous post, we are also a host unit for Marine Enlisted Commissioning Program (MECEP) and Seaman-to-Admiral 21 (STA-21)! The selected OCs have the opportunity to continue being in the active duty status (therefore still receive income) while completing their degree in 36 months! OCs are still eligible to advance while in the program!

If you have any questions on the MECEP or STA-21 programs, send us a dm!

Last weekend, we had the awesome opportunity of hosting a JROTC Brain Brawl!
Brain Brawl is similar to a trivia night where high school students have to buzz in to answer naval knowledge questions as a group of 4. Competing in this event will help JROTC schools work towards receiving a ribbon for their unit.
We hope the high school students had fun, we know we certainly did! See you guys at the pack after you graduate!

For Marine Monday/MECEP Monday we have GYSGT Brian Mazza!
Major: History

Previous MOS: CH-53 Avionics Technician.

GYSGT has a little more than 15 years in service.

"I joined the Marines to serve the country that had given my immigrant father so much opportunity when he had nothing. I decided to pursue the Officer route for more career opportunities and to diversify my leadership style. "

Favorite experience in the military: deployments to developing nations. "It really put into perspective how incredibly lucky we are to have America as our home."

In his off time, his favorite things to do are hide and seek with his son and go hiking with his wife.

Thank you GYSGT Mazza for your hard work, dedication, and leadership in the battalion! And congratulations on the new addition to your family and our wolfpack!
