What would you do if your partner's hand got stuck in a crack?

Clothing jammed in your belay device?

What if your kid is afraid to be lowered after a climb?

This year’s Rally in the Valley event will include a Single Pitch Partner Assistance/Rescue Techniques clinic from Appalachian Climbing School that will explore possible solutions to common scenarios and snafus. The material covered will be focused on single pitch terrain and include baseline assistance/rescue skills like belay escapes/takeovers, pick offs, etc.

This clinic is limited to 6 participants, so claim your spot soon before they fill up. Learn more and register at tinyurl.com/RallyValley24.

Rally in the Valley 2024 is going down September 21st. This CCC and Central Appalachia Climbers Coalition cross coalition party is your chance to raise support for Hidden Valley stewardship projects, give back to the area, celebrate with climbers friends in SWVA, and get a little rowdy, all for a good cause!

The varied, often committing, and not so straight forward climbing across the Carolinas helps breed strong climbers with diverse skill sets. This is certainly the case with NC native Nathan Brown. Big congrats to Nathan, for establishing “Spirit Animal”, a 10 pitch 5.11, completed rope solo over a few year period and located deep in the Rocky Mountains. Nearly any area in NC, you can find a quality route crafted by Nathan Brown. Big congrats and thanks for all you do for climbing, Nathan! We’re stoked to announce that on September 6th we will have a public trail day at Whiteside!

Come help us give back to this incredible climbing destination. Whiteside is a premier ice and multi-pitch climbing destination. For anyone who has had the pleasure of a full length route up the main wall, or an ice route on the north face, you likely agree.

This day will be focused on clogging the many cut through trails in order to start helping Nantahala National Forest personell keep up with the maintenance needed on the summit trail.

Our focus will be on the first 1/4 mile of the Whiteside Loop Trail, before the climber path to the main face. Bring hand saws, rakes, leaf blowers, gloves, and closed toed shoes. Also bring everything you need for a day in the woods. If you plan to climb afterwards; bring your gear just in case!

Some important updates regarding road access to Cedar Rock in Pisgah National Forest. Starting August 1st, Trout Unlimited in cooperation with National Forests in North Carolina are replacing corrugated metal pipe culverts on Cathey’s Creek Road with ecologically-functional crossing structures. This project, from FSR471C – Charles Creek to Ziegler Road, aims to improve habitat for native Brook Trout and enhance road resilience.

🚧 The road will be closed until late October from FSR471C to Ziegler Road, affecting access to FSR471D – Butter Gap. This temporary closure is crucial for the installation of wider, fish-friendly culverts that allow for better stream flow and fish movement.

🐟 These upgrades are essential as narrow culverts often obstruct stream channels, leading to erosion and blocking fish passage. By improving access to cooler waters and vital spawning habitats, Trout Unlimited is helping Brook Trout populations thrive!

💧 Additionally, these projects enhance road durability, preventing future flood damage like we saw during Tropical Storm Fred. These new culverts are designed to withstand 100-year flood events, ensuring both ecological and infrastructural resilience.

Please be mindful of how these road closures will impact road access to Cedar Rock and plan your climbing day accordingly.

Thank you to Trout Unlimited and North Carolina National Forests for working to protect trout habitat, improve stream health, and enhance our Forest Service Roads in Pisgah!
