HAPPY HOLIDAYS
Stay a little warmer this winter!
Buy three sauna sessions during the month of December, and we will gift you one more for free.
Did you know our doctors provide different types of chiropractic analysis and adjustment techniques?
This means where and how they adjust looks different depending on which provider you see.
Chiropractic techniques can fall into three different categories of main focus, although all types impact all systems in some way.
•nervous system
•muscular system
•skeletal system
Not sure which technique you would prefer? Our website explains these difference in greater depth. We also enjoy the opportunity to talk with others about chiropractic.
A unique aspect about our clinic is that if you want to give a different style of chiropractic a try, you’re always welcome to talk more with us about switching providers within our clinic.
Along with different types of chiropractic care, at BFC we have various types of health promoting tools such as traction therapy, sauna, Graston, EMS therapy, and cupping.
Three ways chiropractic can play a role in care for those having difficulty with breastfeeding and tethered oral tissue.
• Extension, backwards movement, of the head involves movement of the occiput on the first vertebrae of the neck, the atlas. Optimal breastfeeding positions involve this head back posture. Just like you tilt your head back to drink water. This movement will also help project the lower jaw forward rather than backwards helping with latch. Often with extra tension and/or tethered tissues in the mouth this joint movement is not occurring optimally.
• The jugular foramen is a hole between the occipital bone, the base of skull, and temporal bone, behind your ear. Through this hole three cranial nerves exit. The glossopharyngeal, accessory, vagus nerves. They control swallowing, neck muscles, and digestion respectively. The hypoglossal nerve exits another hole in the occiput called the hypoglossal canal. This cranial nerve directly impacts tongue function.
• Chiropractic care does not provide diagnosis or treatment of tethered oral tissue - when we suspect this to be an issue we refer to other local health care professionals. However, chiropractic can help release excess tension in the body. This can be helpful for other health care providers to better determine the degree of tension, if a frenulum is truly tethered, and result in less connective tissue being released with the laser or scalpel. The release in this tension can impact whole body function as well.
The first six weeks of the breastfeeding relationship are crucial. Therefore, we recommend having an assessment in those early weeks.
Is chiropractic care during pregnancy different?
While various types of chiropractic all help optimize the natural healing capabilities of the body, there are specific parts of the body certified pregnancy chiropractors are trained at assessing. These structures may not be something every chiropractor is looking at or addressing.
Gentle nervous system based chiropractic care during pregnancy can help reduce common discomforts during pregnancy. There is also research that shows pregnancy chiropractic care can help lead to a more straightforward labor and delivery.
We love helping moms have a more comfortable pregnancy and labor! Both our chiropractors at BFC are trained in Webster (pregnancy) technique and Dr. Cassie is our certified prenatal chiropractor.
Thank you to everyone that took the time to vote for us. We are excited to say we won Best of the Black Hills 2023 for both chiropractic clinic and Dr. Kyle as chiropractor! We look forward to continuing to serve the Black Hills community through chiropractic care.
Our doctors approach foot health differently. When you enter BFC you may notice people walking around barefoot, including our doctors. Not only does this help keep our clinic clean - especially for the little ones crawling on the floor - but it helps strengthen the feet by allowing natural movement to take place. No shoes = no problem here! Our recommendations don’t involve fancy orthotics that need to be changed yearly. Our approach involves trusting the body’s innate capabilities and healing process. It involves strengthening the feet and supporting normal physiology to provide long term relief from injuries and pain that may involve the feet.
Holistic chiropractic care acknowledges dis-ease, and therefore healing, can occur from chemical and emotional stressors - not solely physical stress.

“What if my child doesn’t want to be adjusted?”
Whether the parent describes their child to be shy, anxious, etc this can be concern parents voice to us when scheduling their child for an initial visit.
We encourage parents to be under chiropractic care prior to their child’s first visit. Reason number one — we believe the whole family can benefit from being well adjusted! Reason number two — children tend to be more at ease when they know their parent has been adjusted before and they have been to BFC in the past.
For those children that are the first in their family to be adjusted at BFC, we often find the kid-friendly environment and home-like feel our clinic has is welcoming for them.
Rest assured we always support children and their choice if they want or don’t want an adjustment that day. Children are very in tune with their bodies and we respect that!
We often find that with patience and clear communication children enjoy their adjustments. Sometime that means sitting on a parent’s lap or even hopping right up onto the adjustment table.
After a few visits, parents sometimes find their child even wanting to go first for the adjustment!
Chiropractic works synergistically with the body’s innate healing capabilities.
Chiropractic is not overriding body systems or forcing certain functions to occur.
This type of healing takes time, but when the body heals it can sometimes even feel miraculous.
Chiropractors help facilitate the optimal function of the brain-body connection.
Have you ever felt like you needed an adjustment, but you weren’t hurting yet? Has your child ever told you, without prompting, they were wanting an adjustment?
At BFC, our doctors always give their recommendations for care. However, we also understand and fully support each individual’s God-given intuition.
No one understands your body better than you do. We are here to support you!
Swipe to read our practical tips on where to start healthy lifestyle changes.
Here are a few more recommendations when making these changes:
- Start by evaluating what you really need. Using fewer products can make this change less expensive.
- Implement changes that are free first.
- Decide what health investments are best for you and your family.
One of the therapies we have available at BFC is spinal decompression.
Spinal decompression can be helpful for those experiencing pain from:
- disc herniation
- nerve compression
- sciatica
- degenerative discs
- spinal stenosis
Chiropractic care and spinal decompression are great non-surgical alternatives for those experiencing chronic neck or low back pain.

While pain during pregnancy may be common, it doesn’t have to be normal.
Chiropractic care from a Webster trained or perinatal certified provider involves a specific assessment, adjustment, and soft tissue work that helps create balance in the pelvis of pregnant women.
Optimal neuromusculoskeletal function and reduced interference in the body can help women experience more ease throughout pregnancy. Which can help improve sleep, pain, and decrease risks of difficult labor due to pelvic imbalance.
While some women see our providers in pain during pregnancy, others see them for wellness care as a supportive care option throughout pregnancy.
Think of stressors like filling up a bucket of water. Sometimes you can add a little bit of water and other times a lot. Sometimes the bucket will be able to contain all the water and other times the bucket will overflow.
The body can experience emotional, physical, chemical, or technology related stress. It doesn’t matter which form of stress occurs. Stress is stress.
What matters is how much of the stress occurs, how often it occurs, and how the body adapts to stress. Stress is what leads to inflammation, nervous system dysregulation, and subluxation.
If we take some water out of the bucket, then the next time more water is added it is able to handle it without overflowing. Stress is similar to this too.
Have you ever had a situation occur where one day it didn’t bother you, but the next time it did? Perhaps you responded in a way you didn’t mean to or want to. This is the body in a reactive state verses a responsive state.
Have you ever done the same workout week after week and one day your body couldn’t handle it anymore and an injury occurred? Maybe you have wondered why one family member was sick and another was not? Stress and our levels of chronic stress can increase our susceptibility to injury and illness.
Chiropractic care can help the body better adapt to life stressors. One of the ways it does this is by lowering physical stress on the body. Another way it can do this is by lowering nervous system interference which allows for the body to respond in an appropriate manner verse a flight, flight, freeze response. It helps facilitate the body’s normal healing process.
The body can hold onto stress, tension, and traumas which can impact our physical healing and symptoms. This can happen within the nervous system, muscle systems, fascial system, etc. Often pain and symptoms, and therefore healing, will involve more than one of these bodily systems. This is why you will frequently hear Dr. Cassie talking about the emotional, physical, and chemical components of healing throughout your care at BFC.

tone of your spine determines the
shape, position, tension, and tone
of your life." —Donny Epstein, DC
Graston Technique® is a form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that helps release soft tissue adhesions. Using this technique along with chiropractic care can help facilitate healing and the speed of recovery by increasing blood flow and cellular activity to the area. Our providers are Graston Technique® Practitioners.
Healthy habits don’t always have to be more expensive. When thinking about making lifestyle + health changes we recommend starting with the FREE options first. Once those become part of everyday life habits, perhaps some health investments may be the next step you want to take.
School is out for the summer! What are some of your favorite things to do and places to visit in the Black Hills? We would love to see you share so maybe another family can go enjoy it too!
What does health mean to you? This is an important question to reflect on and it will be different for everyone. It is an ever evolving answer as well. Health isn’t a destination, but rather a state of living. To you, does health mean solely the absence of symptoms? Perhaps it means being able to play with your children without fatigue? Is it being able to respond to stress with ease? Be overly specific with the answer. The more specific you are the easier it will be to live out and obtain. Once you answer this question, next, write down what is stopping you from obtaining health. Does it fall into one of our 4T categories - thought, trauma, toxin, or technology stressor? When we write down or verbalize the why behind what is holding us back from health, we can then work on overcoming those barriers. What does health mean to you and how do you plan to live that out?
Do you adjust kids?
We sure do!
Here are some reasons why.
Chiropractic care can be supportive for growing bodies. Within the first year of life 65% of neurological development takes place. Not only that, but children go through so many different life transitions and milestones.
Regular chiropractic care can help make these transitions easier, reduce stress related neurological interferences, and support overall development.
While both our doctors adjust children, Dr. Cassie is our certified pediatric chiropractor. This means she has gone through additional training and testing to further understand how children’s bodies function and how chiropractic can help with common struggles within the pediatric population.
The chiropractic adjustments we perform for children are very gentle. These adjustments may look different than adult adjustments you have seen or heard of before. Adjustments for young children do not involve twisting or turning movements.
It brings us joy to support children’s health and well-being while also making their experience at the chiropractor a great one!
If you are a practice member and have enjoyed your experience at BFC, would you leave us a Google review? We really appreciate it!

The nervous system is connected to all systems in the body. Therefore, the body relies on it to be functioning to its fullest potential.
Chiropractic is a guide that can help facilitate optimal nervous system function and healing by reducing stress-related neurological interferences in the body.
Chiropractic is not treatment because the body and its design is the true healer.
Your body is already healing. Do you believe that?
As one of the great matriarchs of chiropractic once said • What chiropractic offers is not the treatment of conditions or the mere easing of symptoms, but instead restoration of nerve system performance, which affects physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual expression.
