Did you know waxing is not a one time thing? Sorry to break it to ya, but silky smooth, hair-free results are not achieved in just one visit.

You see, not all out hair grows at once... or we'd be naturally bald when it all fell out. Our hair actually grows in 3 cycles.

Anagen - the growing phase

Catagen - the transition phase

Telogen - the resting phase

During your first wax visit, some of your hairs will still be in the anagen phase (meaning these hairs are just reaching the surface of the skin and will be too short for the wax to remove.) It usually takes, at minimum, 3 wax sessions for the hair cycles to sync. At this point, all the hairs are long enough to be removed by the root together.

So for my first timers, be sure to grow out your hair as much as possible before that first visit. And to save yourself time, money and discomfort, be sure to stay consistent!!!

I get asked all the time, Is exfoliating really necessary?
The short answer, YES

So how do choose your type of exfoliant?
Well this depends on your skin type and skin care needs. Both do wonders for your skin but avoid using one right after the other to prevent over-exfoliating or damaging the lipid barrier of the skin.

Physical exfoliants provide instant satisfaction with the use of a granular scrub that when applied to the skin, manually buffs or abrades the skin's surface and therefore removes the build-up of dead skin cells. Physical exfoliation can be done wet or dry. Some examples are use of a dry brush, exfoliating mitt, and scrubs.

Chemical exfoliants include the use of enzymes and acid-based products that work to dissolve the protein bonds that exist between dead skin cells, allowing the dead skin to essentially slough off. Examples of these would be AHA's, enzymes, and peels.

Keep in mind that several OTC (over the counter) products on the market contain fillers that can be over-drying to the skin leaving that 'tight' itchy feeling. Be sure to communicate with your esthetician. Follow their aftercare suggestions as they have gotten to know your skin and chances are, they are carrying the professional grade products your skin is in need of.

Whether you are new to waxing or not, here are 3 things NOT to do before coming in for your wax appointment.

🚫 NO trimming! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The longer your hair, the better. With trimming, you chance making your hair too short, which means you might not get the cleanest wax. If it’s absolutely necessary, I’ll handle it. But when in doubt, GROW IT OUT!

🚫 Don’t spray tan before your wax appointment! Waxing right after can lift your freshly sprayed tan leaving it splotchy. No body wants a patchy tan! You also DON’T want to get tanned right after your wax either. The pores are open after your wax and you can actually end up with spotty tanned hair follicles!

TIP: Wax at least 48 hours before your tanning appointment for a perfectly flawless finish.

🚫 Avoid getting waxed right after a heavy, sweaty workout. This can affect the results of your appointment. The hair follicles can be too heated causing breakage in the hair, or sweat can make the wax roll right off - Hot Yoga is a BIG NO-NO before a wax. I also don’t recommend working out right after since the hair follicle is open and sweating can cause breakouts and irritation.

Tip: If you can, aim to wax on a day you won’t workout.

People are always so shocked when they ask if I’m still getting waxed at 37 weeks of pregnancy. Can you get waxed during your pregnancy? Is it safe for you and the baby?

In short… YES! You can absolutely get waxed during your pregnancy.

Trying to balance in the bathroom with a razor down there and your precious baby bump in the way - basically going in blind, is not exactly something our mommas like to experience or chance! (OUCH!)😫 But if you want a clean up … whether It’s part or the full thing … waxing during your pregnancy is definitely an option.

Now with that being said, every pregnancy can be different. So if you’re unsure, it’s best to consult your OB/GYN.

If you choose to body wax, exfoliation is KEY in your aftercare routine.

Your homecare routine is about 80% of your wax results. To get the most out of your waxing, be sure to exfoliate 2-3 times a week in between your appointments.

DO NOT exfoliate on the day of your appointment. Your skin will be sensitive from exfoliating and even more sensitive after waxing.

Exfoliate two days prior to your appointment for best waxing results and to avoid sensitivity.

Wait at least 48 hours after your wax service to exfoliate. Doing this too soon can lead to broken and irritated skin.

Staying consistent is crucial when it comes to your wax sessions. Our hair grows in cycles and waxing works to weaken the follicle by removing the entire root. This causes the hair to grow back weaker, thinner, and slower.

Put it this way, each time the hair is removed, the body sends signals to your brain that the hair is no longer there.

Consistently removing the hair every 4 weeks (or whatever is recommended for the designated area) continues to send these messages to the brain. Over time, your brain starts to take the hint - 'Maybe we don't actually need this hair after all.'

So it starts to give up on regrowing something it deems unnecessary. Some people experience weaker and slower growth after just an appointment or two, others might take more time. Either way, consistency is key.
