Thanks to all the folks who joined San Mateo Deputy Mayor Rob Newsom and me today for Cafecito con Noelia at the iconic Heidi's Pies in San Mateo. On peoples' minds were housing, public safety, emergency preparedness for the Los Prados neighborhood in San Mateo, oversight of biotech companies, and much more.

Always great to hear directly from our residents on what matters to them and share what we are working on. Many ideas have come out of these Cafecitos. Sign up for my newsletter at smcgov.org/district-2 to find out when and where to join me for the September Cafecito.

Today the Board proclaimed August 2024 as Child Support Awareness Month to elevate the key role child support plays in creating stable and nurturing homes and to raise awareness of the incredible resource our Department of Child Support Services provides to our community.

From replacing its application process with a new simplified online form to holding Friday afternoon appointments with the Family Law Facilitator office specifically for Child Support Services clients, the Department is helping parents and guardians navigate the process. Make an appointment through a caseworker at 866-901-2312 or [email protected]. For more information about the programs available through California Child Support Services, visit https://www.smcgov.org/dcss.

8.7.2024 All five homicides in San Mateo to date in 2024 have been domestic violence murders of mothers and their children. I’m devastated to hear about the pregnant mother of four children who was killed with her full-term, unborn baby in an apparent domestic violence incident in my district. My heart goes out to her precious children and family as they navigate this unimaginable trauma. After over a year of working urgently with the Domestic Violence Council to make San Mateo County safer for families, we are faced with this glaring reminder of the immediate need. I commit to holding this mother and her family in my heart as we carry on the work with even more rigor, knowing that this tragedy and the many others that have impacted our community should have been prevented.

If you or someone you know is experiencing intimate partner abuse, find support at (Communities Overcoming Relationship Abuse) at 800.300.1080. The odds of homicide increase 750% for people who have been previously strangled or choked by their partner. If you or a neighbor are in danger, don't hesitate to call 911.

In November, San Mateo County voters will have the opportunity to vote on the Bay Area Affordable Housing Bond, which could bring $2.1 billion to San Mateo County to address our affordable housing and homelessness crisis. I am excited to announce that our District 2 Measure K grant application for 2024 is open for submissions!

I take the responsibility of allocating these taxpayer dollars very seriously, which is why my team and I created a transparent, equitable, data-driven application process. Instead of relying on prior relationships or connections, applicants will demonstrate how their projects are the best use of public funds to meet the District 2 Strategic Plan goals.

For some background: Measure K is a half-cent sales tax renewed by San Mateo County voters in 2016 to address the county’s most critical needs such as affordable housing and emergency preparedness. A small portion of these funds are allocated for district discretionary needs, which the Board of Supervisors must approve.

Thanks to all the 2023 awardees for their feedback, which informed improvements in the process for this year. I’m looking forward to partnering with amazing organizations in advancing our District 2 strategic plan and mission to interrupt inequity, promote representation and belonging, and create lasting change that serves us ALL.

Find more information and the full grant application at https://bit.ly/D2MeasureK2024

Applications close on August 2nd at 11:59pm.

🇺🇸 Happy 4th of July! May peace and freedom ring for all peoples everywhere.

While County offices and cooling centers like the San Mateo County libraries are closed on the 4th of July, you can find relief from the heat at the Adult Community Center (ACC), located at 601 Chestnut Street, San Carlos, from 12:00pm to 6:00pm or Hillsdale Mall. Drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and elderly neighbors. Never leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Don’t forget to leave plenty of water for your pets while keeping them indoors, safe from the loud sounds of fireworks.

Remember that fireworks—even sparklers—are illegal in most of San Mateo County. This heat wave in the middle of fire season makes them extremely dangerous. Possessing fireworks carries a $1,000 fine. Report any illegal firework activity at 650-363-4911 or to the Sheriff’s Office Anonymous tip line at 800-547-2700. Wishing you a safe, cool Independence Day!

Today is — because Asking Saves Kids.

Always ask: "Is there an unlocked gun where my child plays?"

This is a life-saving question. In the U.S.:
-4.6 million kids live in a home with an unlocked, loaded gun
-8 kids a day are unintentionally injured or killed by family fire
Asking if there are unlocked guns where kids play saves lives.
