SUBJECT: Attempted kidnapping at Sequoia High School

LOCATION: Sequoia High School, 1201 Brewster Avenue, Redwood City

DATE/TIME: July 18, 2024, 2:00 p.m.

On July 18, 2024, at approximately 2:00 p.m., Sequoia High School staff reported a suspicious person who entered a classroom, grabbed a male student, and attempted to pull him out of the room. A teacher physically intervened, causing the suspect to flee. The suspect, later identified as Trey Duus (24), told staff he had a gun and not to touch him as he fled. RCPD officers responded and the school was put in lockdown while the officers attempted to locate Duus.

Officers began searching the campus and encountered Duus as he exited a school building on the west side of the campus. Duus was holding a long cylindrical object, later determined to be an umbrella, as he exited the building. Duus resisted efforts to detain him and officers deployed less-lethal force options to subdue him. Duus sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for a medical check. Through further investigation, officers learned Duus had punched a hole in a bathroom wall and stolen a printer cartridge as he fled through the school and prior to being taken into custody.

Duus was cleared at the hospital and will be booked in to the Maguire Correctional Facility on charges of attempted kidnapping, burglary, child endangerment, obstructing officers, vandalism, and trespassing on school grounds. There is no on-going threats or safety concern for the school or the community.

PRESS RELEASE:

SUBJECT: East Palo Alto man arrested for unlawful discharge of a firearm and several charges

LOCATION: 100 block of Orchard Avenue, Redwood City

DATE/TIME: July 7, 2024, 4:23 p.m.

On Sunday, July 7, 2024, at approximately 4:23 p.m., Redwood City Police Officers responded on a report of a hit and run vehicle collision in which a 9-1-1 caller was advising the suspect was fleeing the scene on foot. Moments later the caller advised the suspect, later identified as Brayan Lopez Ramirez (19) of East Palo Alto, was being chased by bystanders, which then escalated into a struggle between Lopez Ramirez and several of the bystanders. During the struggle, a gunshot was heard and Lopez Ramirez fled on foot, brandishing a firearm as he did so. Lopez Ramirez successfully avoided apprehension but left his vehicle at the scene.

One of the bystanders who struggled with Lopez Ramirez suffered minor burns from the ejected cartridge casing from the gunshot, but no other injuries. Redwood City officers canvassed the area and recovered footage of the incident. Redwood City detectives responded and assumed control of the investigation. Detectives were able to identify Lopez Ramirez as the suspect and obtained an arrest warrant for a series of felony offenses and also collaborated with several neighboring police agencies, who also had arrest warrants issued for crimes Lopez Ramirez committed in their jurisdictions.

On July 11, at approximately 8:42 a.m., RCPD detectives conducted a surveillance and apprehension operation, which resulted in the safe arrest of Lopez Ramirez. RCPD detectives, aided by several other neighboring law enforcement agencies, executed a search warrant at his East Palo Alto residence. Lopez Ramirez was subsequently booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on multiple arrest warrants.

Anyone with additional information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Detective Anthony Barron at (650) 780-7673.

On August 10, 2023, Officer Ordaz and Officer Knudsen responded to a report of shots fired in the 1400 block of Madison Avenue in Redwood City.

Upon arrival, they encountered a victim suffering from several life-threatening gunshot wounds. Without hesitation, Officer Ordaz and Officer Knudsen began life saving measures. Officer

Since the scene was not secure for medical personnel, Officer Ordaz and Officer Knudsen placed the victim in the back seat of a patrol vehicle and transported him to a safe location to receive emergency medical care. SUBJECT: Redwood City man arrested for unlawful discharge of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm in public, and possession of false ID card.

INCIDENT LOCATION: 500 Block of Stambaugh Street, Redwood City

DATE/TIME: June 19, 2024, 7:45 p.m.

On 01/01/2024, at approximately 12:20 a.m., Redwood City Police Officers responded to the area of the 500 block of Stambaugh Street, in Redwood City, on a report of a subject who discharged a firearm numerous times outside the apartment building. During the investigation, officers canvassed the area and recovered both spent and unspent bullets. Amongst those recovered were .45 caliber and 9mm casings. There were no suspects identified at that time in the investigation.

During the New Year’s holidays, the discharging of fi****ms is all too common and normally difficult, if not impossible to identify perpetrators. These random and negligent acts are particularly dangerous to the community, as there are typically large numbers of community members out celebrating, just as in this case. Through investigation, it was revealed that there were several Redwood City citizens, including children, in the area when the suspect fired multiple shots during this incident.

After approximately six months of continuous investigation, the Redwood City Police Department’s Street Crime Suppression Team developed information regarding this investigation and identified Redwood City resident Juan Jose VeraGaleana (23) as the Suspect who had discharged the firearm in public that New Year’s Eve and early New Year’s morning.

On 06/19/2024, the Redwood City Police Department’s Street Crime Suppression Team and the Investigations Unit served a search warrant on VeraGaleana and his residence.

During the search of VeraGaleana’s residence, detectives located a .45 caliber handgun, .45 caliber and 9mm ammunition, along with firearm accessories within his property. A records check of the firearm revealed it was not registered to him, or anyone he knew. Additionally, a fraudulent California identification card was located with VeraGalean'a digital image, however it had a fraudulent name depicted with the identification number of a real person, who VeraGaleana did not know.

Detectives were later able to obtain an admission and video of the incident from VeraGaleana. VeraGaleana was arrested and booked into the Maguire Correctional facility for the three felony violations.
