We're continuing to sell books at a low cost while also being sustainable - and we appreciate you supporting us!
Grassroots Books doesn't rely on one person for operations. We have a big+awesome team, great vendors, and loyal customers. While the owner here is also interested in retiring in the next several years, we're optimistic to be able to run without her.
Thank you for your support - we're still ok and still sell lots of books for $1. Yup, we have out-dollar-stored the $1 stores!

"We got our Christmas shopping done below budget"
"Way cheaper than other bookstores"
"I get a box of books from the Outside Sale every year, and I let my family pick what they want for Christmas gifts... no, there aren't any left at the end to return, I know my family and what they like."
If you haven't had a free book from the Outside Sale this year, today might be your day! Also, we reset on Jan 1, so it's fine to get one today and another in January.

Hello word and book enthusiasts! We have news and events to share! 🎉
1️⃣ Author Valerie Fridland visits today.
Her book 'Like, Literally, Dude: Arguing for the Good in Bad English' shows how we can re-imagine these forms as exciting new linguistic frontiers rather than our culture’s impending demise.
- With delightful irreverence and expertise built over two decades of research, Fridland weaves together history, psychology, science, and laugh-out-loud anecdotes to explain why we speak the way we do.
The weather will be perfect, so we’re doing it at the back of the Outside Sale. Drop in for some or all!
3:30pm - Short talk about Valerie's takeaways from writing 'Like, Literally, Dude'
3:45pm - Book signing
4pm - Q+A
There are links in the comments below: yesterday's Wall Street Journal review, an audio sample, and KOLO interview yesterday.

4️⃣ Fab reviews! Thank you for all your love and support and for how nice y'all are, in person too!
---Yesterday, Robb:
Picked up two hardcover Dark Tower book today. I was floored by the price of them. This shop is amazing. I have never been so happy about buying a book, much less two. I got two of my favorites for less than a value meal at McDonald's. This shop is doing God’s work.
I want to thank everyone there. Amazing people. Amazing selection. Amazing prices. Would give more stars if Google allowed.
--- Mid-April, Will:
I've had the good fortune of living in a number of cities across the US over the past few years. In each city, I'm always on the lookout for a great bookstore. Unfortunately, I'm always let down because none of them come close to Grassroots Books.
I'm not being hyperbolic when I say: Grassroots Books is the best bookstore I've ever been in. It truly has set the bar for me. Such a great selection of old and new as well as books on all topics imaginable. Plus the books are very reasonably priced.
Already planning my next trip to Reno and I'll definitely be bringing a spare suitcase for my visit to Grassroots Books.
---
Happy reading!

📚🥳 CALLING all READERS far and wide,
Come to our OUTSIDE SALE, you'll be THRILLED to decide!
We've got a TREAT, oh yes, it's TRUE,
Books over 20 years old, older than you, older than your GRANDMA too!
🤔🗨️ Why read books from a LONG time ago, or those not in big box stores, you say?
WISDOM and tales of the past hold a special sway!
Consider the new revisions of Charlie and the 🍫 CHOCOLATE Factory,
A timeless story made MODERN, oh so satisfactory!
📖💡 Grumpy OLD words replaced with phrases BRIGHT,
"Not ladylike" now reads "undignified," oh, so polite!
"Get all that mud off your pants!" the word police did ALTER,
Now it's “Get all that mud off your TROUSERS!” – a change that falters!
🍫✨ It is a story of extremes, a tale to DELIGHT,
"They still wear the same kind of clothes they wore in the jungle. They INSIST upon that" turned to "They do like JOKES" in an odd rewrite.
🚫🚷 Totally GONE, these words have gone south:
“You only had to mention the word ‘cacao’ to an Oompa-Loompa and he would start dribbling at the mouth”
Also disappeared, without a TRACE:
"Going white in the face"
And memory-holed, Oompa Loompa’s song play:
"But this revolting boy, of course,/Was so unutterably vile,/So greedy, foul, and infantile,/He left a most disgusting taste/Inside our mouths, and so in haste/We chose a thing that, come what may./Would take the nasty taste away”
Gone, gone, removed by the word police hordes:
“They’re as drunk as lords”
“So please, oh please, we beg, we pray,
Go throw your TV set away,
And in its place you can install
A lovely bookshelf on the wall.
Then fill the shelves with lots of books.”
― Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
“Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.”
― Roald Dahl

There is $67 in an envelope here to buy books for kids. Got kids who are low on books? The customer service team handles giving books.
If you know kids who are book-deficient,
bring them by,
We have $120 in the give-a-kid-a-book envelope,
no lie.
In December, when it's cold outside,
A bookstore took a crazy ride,
With 10,000 books to sell and show,
It set up shop in the sun and snow.
The customers came, one and all,
To browse and shop, have a ball,
They browsed the shelves, far and wide,
To find their perfect book, for only a dollar to buy.
But who's the crazier one, you might ask,
The Reno bookstore, or the customers who shopped outside in their mask?
Both are brave and both are bold,
For braving the cold to find a book to hold.
So if you're looking for a book to read,
Don't let the cold stop you, take the lead,
Head to the bookstore, don't be shy,
And find your perfect book, for only a dollar to buy.
And if you're looking for a movie to watch,
Don't let the cold stop you, take the botch,
Head to the Outside Sale, don't be shy,
Where you'll find 5 carts of dollar films, to buy.

SEVEN RECENT FEEDBACKS, thank you so much (Yes, even for the negative.)
1. (Thumbs up) I wish you would have a larger section of literature in Spanish. But I love your store!
RESPONSE: Thank you for the feedback! We buy all Spanish books when we find them new-at-a-discount and used.
We would love to special order books for you. The price is 20% off, and if you order in the morning, we usually have the book the following afternoon.
Also, we can start trying bestsellers in Spanish... would you like to let us know what you think will sell here? Our previous attempts to guess at what people want to buy have been misses!
2. (Thumbs up) Lovely choices of books and affordable! My kids loved it!
3. (Thumbs up) Always a great variety
4. (One star) If you want to sell used books, I'd recommend selling them online. Came here on a Saturday with my kids who wanted to sell their books, website doesn't specifically say when the store buys books. Was told by two different employees we need to come on a TH even after I mentioned my kids wanted to sell their books, and would be in school on Thursday's during the hours the store buys books from the public. Neither were accommodating and it was not busy, two other employees were socializing when we asked. Two weeks later I drive back minus the kids to sell the books, some were actually new books we had purchased when we were there the last time. My kid read them so fast, and was excited to earn some $ to put towards more books. Big letdown considering how much $ we've put into this business over the years. They gave me FOUR dollars which covered the two trips I made to the store. They also don't respond to the number you can text on their website. Will not be back
RESPONSE: Thank you for your feedback. We are motivated to improve!
Here is how we’re thinking about this so far, and please let us know with any follow-up concerns.
How much we pay for used books: our business model is to sell books at a low cost, and pay a low amount for them in cash. This keeps our store busy. We’re not able to pay “well” for used books, except in certain categories including new releases. (Generally, if we think we can sell a used book fast for $10 in the store, we pay $3.)
Telling you about buying books: the front counter team has not received training for paying cash (because that training takes hundreds of hours).
Team members socializing: occasionally team members do this - hopefully in a friendly way. Team members are quick to help when there’s something that they can do to be helpful.
Text messages: we have about 20+ text conversations daily. We just sought any missed messages and found one from 7 months ago (and replied now). If you would like to help us further troubleshoot, we’re interested.
Website: our website says that buying is on Thursdays from 9-2 on the WE BUY page, and there isn’t info on the home page.
What to do with used books: we think we are more successful at finding the next readers than other organizations. We sell used kids books for 25¢, $1 and $2+, plus Bag Sales. Many organizations throw out slightly damaged books, but we give them a chance by putting them in front of a lot of shoppers!
Kate, thank you for being a customer for many years, and we hope you’ll reconsider. We learn tons and revise our approach from comments and complaints.
5. (One star) This place is such a disservice to music lovers and collectors in Washoe County! How dare they lie about fact the resell valuable albums on eBay and music collectors in the States and overseas, yet they buy from unknowing customers for pennies, no wear near real value! They insulted me nt want to buy DECCA LPS dating from 1920/30 era from a few bucks, knowing full well resale is in the hundreds! May that store never burn down!!
RESPONSE:
You called us and hung up very fast (before we had a chance to explain). You didn't visit our store.
As we said (or tried to say) on the phone, we sell vinyl for $1 in person (29¢ on Sundays during the bag sale). Since they sell for $1 at most, we can only pay zero to 20¢ typically for everyday records, depending on genre and condition.
No, we don't try to buy high-value items for pennies. We just can’t give accurate quotes on the phone.
Yes, we can pay a wholesale value for collector items with cash or give auction assistance.
If you would like to sell us high-value vinyl or other collectibles, please schedule an appointment or stop by one of our collectors events, 4-6pm Sept 29 or Oct 27.
6. (Five stars) Anytime I'm in Reno from Fallon, I love to go to the back yard sales. This time I found 14 books for $3.75. They were all a quarter... that I've been looking for.
7. (Five stars) Lovely people here. I ended up passing out after a blood donation while in-store and they were very kind, helpful, and generous when I came to. Even caught me before I hit the floor and called 911 just to make sure I was okay. Very grateful to them for that and for gifting me the books I had chosen from their wonderful selection after the ordeal. Thank you to Julia, Jen, and Mason. Happy to go back and buy twice as much as I was going to. They always have a great choice of discounted books in really good shape and are always willing to help you find what you need.

We contacted the local financial crimes police but haven't heard back yet.

A TALE OF TWO REVIEWS
Protagonist #1: “Monumental waste of my time. Five reusable grocery bags FULL and only got $4.00. Did not even pay for my gas! Won't be back.” (June 16)
Protagonist #2. “One of the best bookstores in Reno. They have the best prices out of everyplace I have gone to.” (Jun 27)
PLOT SUMMARY:
LOW PRICES. Lower than cost-of-beer low!
- Customers love the prices!
- Also, customers love the selection. Big box stores have more books, but selection doesn’t change much week-to-week.
- Grassroots Books has more than 10,000 fresh titles every week, including books that are 100 years old, unusual role-playing books, and more.
CASH FOR STUFF:
- Customers get cash for used books, DVDs, vinyl records, comic books, and board games. Some customers are delighted, and others are disappointed. We're often "low" for fiction or coffee table books over 5 years since publication.
- Grassroots doesn’t pay for books that are headed directly to the $1 Outside Sale. There are 10,000/week, and they don’t all sell. Every Sunday, there’s a massive $5 Bag Sale, and we start with all fresh books on Mondays.
- We make appointments for manga, books released in the last year, local interest, mining, collections of advanced material such as math, comics, and vinyl.
-We no longer pay for CDs, but we do accept them for the outside sale.
- Guest stars! Lee, Ivye, Rich and Sal compete with each other and us for special books/vinyl/coins/lamps/etc. 4pm to 6pm July 28, Aug 25, Sept 29.
