Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship.

At Tuesday's Board of County Commissioner's meeting, Washoe County Emergency Manager Kelly Echeverria recognized library staff for their assistance with the , , and . Librarians have been essential in creating evacuation centers and Incident Command Centers to help the community handle local emergencies.

Here's another batch of "Hearts for the Library" from the Spanish Springs Library. Patrons were invited to write down their favorite things about our libraries, and their responses have us feeling all kinds of feels. We've received more than 500 of these beauties, and we're excited to share them with you. We love our community!

On September 17, 1787, during the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, influential socialite Elizabeth Willing Powel posed a question to a Founding Father of the United States. "Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?" she asked. The reply was, "A republic, madam, if you can keep it."

In early 2024, our newest bookmobile launched, thanks to funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Learning isn't just for kids. It can be a lifelong experience! Several Washoe County Library locations regularly host Lifelong Learning classes geared toward folks over 55. This month, the Sierra View Library hosts a watercolor series. Learn painting techniques, express yourself, and meet new friends. Join us at 10 am every Saturday for the rest of the month.
