Building Department updates from the City of Rensselaer, NY
This is why you never have your grill near your home!
Here are six common sensical grilling tips for Memorial Day Weekend.
1. For propane grills, check the gas tank for leaks before use in the months ahead.
2. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
3. Place the grill well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.
4. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area.
5.If you use starter fluid when charcoal grilling, only use charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. When you have or are finished grilling, let the coals cool completely before disposing in a metal container.
6. Never leave your grill unattended when in use.
It's that time of year again. Never plug an air conditioner into a power strip or an extension cord. Air conditions should always be plugged directly into a dedicated outlet.
The more electricity something uses, the more heat is generated in the wiring.
NEVER use power strips or extension cords to power an air conditioner, refrigerator, or anything that draws a lot of power. Anything that uses a lot of power should always be plugged straight into the outlet.
No extension cords. No splitters. No power strips.
Lawn signs or what code offices refer to as 'bandit signs' are not permitted to be placed on city right of way. These types of signs include business signs as well as political signs.
The only permitted areas for signs are on private property. When placing a sign on private property, the zoning regulations for signs must be followed. Most signs are only permitted for a short period of time.
If you had a sign placed on public right of way and it has disappeared, chances are it was picked up by Code Enforcement.
Please contact the Building and Zoning Department at 518-465-1693 to arrange for pick up. As a courtesy, we will hold on to all retrieved signs for 1 week and would be happy to provide you with a copy of the Zoning Regulations on permitted signs.
With the 2024 Spring Bulk Pick Up Event now underway, please take note that Brush / Leaves / Trees will not be picked up while the bulk event takes place.
With the Bulk Event taking place over 4 weeks and Memorial Day being Monday, May 27th, the next date brush will be picked up is Monday, June 3rd.
Brush should not be left out curbside during this timeframe.
If you have any questions, please contact Solid Waste at 518-462-9616.
Code Enforcement will be leaving notices at properties that have brush out curbside. It is asked that the brush be placed in the yard or side of the property and not left out.

Please do your part to keep Rensselaer clean. Our weather lately has been extreme with high temperatures and rainy days. Grass and w**ds are rapidly growing.
The Building Department Bureau of Code Enforcement is sending out a large amount of letters to property owners who are not properly maintaining grass and w**ds. Excessive grass and w**d growth is a violation of state and local property maintenance code and causes blight in the community.
