Human progress, true human progress is who we become and what we achieve, not what we create. This is the purpose of life. Inventing something is an achievement. But using it in unethical ways is regression, not progress.

Had a writing moment today.

What can I say of vanity?

Vanity is an obsession with one’s visual image. It is set against a perceived ideal, something that is valued. For example, we might think being ripped with bulging muscles, 6-pack abs and devoid of body hair except for the hair on our head is the best way a person can be. We value it for its perceived strength and the power that comes with it. We might think that wide hips, a thin waste, large breasts and full lips are the image of the ideal woman. We value it for its perceived beauty, and perhaps the power that comes with it.
Vanity is lost on the image of an ideal that is specific, not versatile. Bulging muscles might look nice, but they reduce flexibility, which is a key component of physical health. S*x appeal can be useful in attracting a mate, but it can also attract predatory men, resulting in s*xual assault. I have seen in my lifetime this pressure for men to look like a body building machine. I have seen pressure for women to always look pretty with makeup. These are false ideals.

“Gibbons mate with gibbons. Deer mingle with deer. Mudsuckers carouse with mudsuckers. Humans consider Lady Feather and Deer-Grace the most beautiful of women. But if fish saw them, they’d head for deep water. If birds saw them, they’d scatter into azure depths. If deer saw them, they’d go bounding away. So of these four, which knows the truth about beauty for all beneath heaven?” -Chuang Tzu

I learned later in my life that not all women want a big muscular man. Some women have learned through bad experiences that those men focused so hard on their bodies aren’t as emotionally intelligent and spend more time at the gym than with their families. There is a sort of attraction for what they call the “dad bod” these days, which has a bit of a belly, some strength, and is the figure of a married man raising kids and taking care of his home. This is a far cry from the body builder.
Some of the most beautiful women I’ve ever met wear no makeup at all. My wife is gorgeous to me without it. I find that what is genuine is far more attractive than layers of makeup. I’ve found that kindness and emotional intelligence are far more intriguing to me than the thought of a quick romp in bed.

Fixation on an ideal of physique loses sight of the importance of a well-rounded person. We have intelligence, emotional maturity, physical characteristics, creativity and a whole host of important traits. Vanity focuses mainly on the visual appearance but also includes achievements. The well-rounded person is more versatile and thereby a much better person in the long run, by means of kindness, intelligence and the ability to do a wide variety of things with a good level of success.
The Greeks believed in the golden mean:

“Moral behavior is the mean between two extremes - at one end is excess, at the other deficiency. Find a moderate position between those two extremes, and you will be acting morally.” -Aristotle

There is nothing wrong with having s*x appeal or being physically strong. However, these things should not be the goal. The goal is to be a person of strong character. One who acts morally and beneficially to others. Yet, many are lost in a wasteland of vanity.

The last 2 days of writing have been perhaps the most controversial of my thoughts, as I have realized that there is suffering in this world, and it is necessary. That may strike some as an unacceptable conclusion, but it is the truth. Suffering is the way in which humanity becomes aware that something is wrong. Only then can we correct the problem. That said, not all suffering is necessary. It is our duty to ensure that suffering does not continue when it arises.

I have changed gears to work on the next book in my philosophical works. This year has been bananas, and the pandemic had thrown off my writing for quite some time, not to mention I just got married to the love of my life and purchased a house earlier this year. Things have been sooooo busy. However, I made some good headway today, and intend to re-establish my writing habits to power through and get another book out.
