On August 15, 1973, Carolista Fletcher Baum placed herself in the path of a bulldozer removing sand from Jockey’s Ridge and refused to move. The driver cut off the engine and talked with Baum, who, after some time, left the dune unscathed. When the operator left, Baum took the distributor cap so the machine would not start.

Baum received word of the bulldozer from her three children who long had climbed the dune for the spectacular views it offered.

Though local groups had talked about protecting the large dune from encroaching development for years, Baum was the driving force that made the idea a reality. She helped form the People to Preserve Jockey’s Ridge after her dramatic protest, raising money and organizing petition drives to capture the attention of state and local lawmakers.

She even drove to Raleigh every day for three weeks to keep the dune in the minds of legislators.

In 1973, the Division of Parks and Recreation issued a report in favor of preserving Jockey’s Ridge as a state park, and a year later the dune was declared a National Natural Landmark. When the General Assembly appropriated funds to create the park in 1975, the preservation of the dune was secured for generations to come.
**We have received a historical marker application for Baum and it will be considered by the advisory committee in December--so stay tuned!**

Calling this one the redeye – blood orange hibiscus over toasted pistachio. Maybe it’s me, but it feels like a good time to practice some self-care, and as far as I’m concerned, ice cream qualifies (at least really good ice cream does). Come get it if you need it. Open now.

We are looking for a unicorn – someone to care for our baby like it’s their own – someone who will make it their own and craft it into the best that it can be. Someone with a passion for coffee, food, hospitality, people, and community. Someone to spearhead our coffee and breakfast offering conceptually, through hiring and training the proper staff, and through practice, executing great coffee, food, and service.

This person will exude the good feelings and great atmosphere we hope to foster throughout the cafe and our brand, and that should trickle down to set an example for all of our employees.

If you’ve dreamt of running your own coffee shop / cafe from top to bottom, with both creative and managerial control, this is your chance.

You must have hands-on experience with coffee and espresso service. Must have a passion for both coffee and food – specifically breakfast and lunch fare. Must be beyond excited at the chance to concept and then create a unique and contemporary offering of both food and coffee – not something run-of-the-mill, but something we might expect to find in Austin, Malibu, or Brooklyn.

This will be a full-time salaried position $42-55k to start depending on experience – potentially 6am until 2 or 3pm, 5-6 days a week, so a morning person is required. Flexible paid time off and opportunity for healthcare within 6-months.

This person will maintain, train, and manage staff, review and report sales to the owner, maintain and enforce an impeccable level of both cleanliness and professionalism in the front of the house and back of the house, manage and contribute to social media channels in coordination with our designer resources, and support and reinforce our brand vision and experience to our customers. And although we use terms like “brand vision” this is not a corporate or chain environment – we expect, embrace, and hopefully empower diversity, uniqueness, and personality from our employees in all capacities.

You will be the main point of contact for the cafe as it pertains to most situations and inquiries.

A cover letter describing your background, vision, and passion for this potential position is required.

Please also provide both a professional and a personal reference. No walk-ins, please.

Thank you – we can’t wait to meet you!

🔥🔥🔥 It’s going to be perfect ice cream weather on this Memorial Day 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 Try a great new flavor to the cafe menu – 🍓strawberry basil 🍃 which we think pairs perfectly with temperatures above 85° and has subtle notes of “holy moly, it’s hot out here!” 🔥🔥🔥

It’s hard to believe we’ve been open nearly 3 weeks, and that we’re this far into this cafe adventure that began back in October when we were told our kitchen space wasn’t zoned for making pints to sell in stores. That launched us into search mode for the perfect production space, and the best space we found had this little bonus area – a cafe! Now we get to make all the ice cream for our trucks and soon-to-be-available-in-local-stores pints, AND we get to invite the whole city inside for coffee, treats, and ice cream.

Come see us today if you can brave the 🌪⛈, but if not, tomorrow kicks off a great stretch of 🌞 and 🔥 which makes 🧊☕️ and 🍦 the perfect treat!
