Orbital Music Park
Orbital Music Park helps musicians of every style, age, and skill level play together more often. We're musicians. We know how hard it is to connect.
We want to help you make magic. Morgan Huff and Tom Illmensee are the co-founders of Orbital Music Park and the organizers. They have been playing music together in many bands in Richmond, VA (and beyond) for more than 20 years. Participating musicians will be screened and matched personally by Morgan and Tom. There’s no algorithm or anything fancy here. Just two dudes working hard to match everyone up. We're focused only on helping musicians in RVA.

SUN 10/13 vibrant modern jazz with EMILY KUHN
Emily Kuhn is a jazz trumpet player based in Chicago described by the Chicago Jazz Magazine as having “a charismatic style and a sophistication that belies her youth.” Originally from Charlottesville, VA, Emily has made a name for herself as an active bandleader, sidewoman, composer, and educator. Described as “the kind of lyrical, spacious jazz that draws you deep within its cocoon-like atmosphere” (Matt Collar, All Music), the music draws inspiration from the natural world, science fiction, and the Covid-19 pandemic, meditating on themes of stillness, connection, grief, and hope. The group relies on their strong foundation of musical trust to deftly navigate influences from jazz, rock, chamber music, and Americana. SUNDAY 10/13 JAZZ WORKSHOP with MIKE HAWKINS
Hosted by jazz bassist, music educator, bandleader, and OMP-member Mike Hawkins, this is not a “traditional open mic” - but rather a hosted experience curated by OMP. Players of all levels are welcome - and superb rhythm section instruments are provided. The OMP team curates ensembles as the night unfolds - so the bands are different every song and every week! From standards, to free-form improv, to vocal classics, the showcase is a parade of extraordinary performances. Mike Hawkins has performed with many jazz legends, including saxophonist Jimmy Heath, pianist Cyrus Chestnut; vocalist Vanessa Rubin; and drummers Carl Allen, Ralph Peterson, and Cindy Blackmon.
Our three invitations to performers and the audience:
1. Be cool // OMP is the place for peace, love, support and kindness. Critique must be requested.
2. Listen // Be mindful of what other players are doing. Be mindful of dynamics. It’s OK to not play - music needs silence, too.
3. Courage // The good stuff is beyond your comfort zone. Make mistakes. See rule #1.
