At ABPR we pride ourselves on being inclusive and encourage all our colleagues to be themselves - whatever their sexual or gender identity. In honor of Trans Awareness Week, here’s a wonderful post by ABPR publicity associate Alex Zumpino.
Seven Books to Enjoy During Trans Awareness Week
By Alex Zumpino
This week is Transgender Awareness Week, observed from November 13 to November 19. This is a one-week celebration leading up to the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR), which memorializes victims of transphobic violence. Below, I’ve shared seven of my favorite fiction (and one non-fiction) books about the transgender experience ranging from Children’s, Middle Grade, and Young Adult.
A Quick & Easy Guide to Q***r & Trans Identities by Mady G., J.R. Zuckerberg
Limerence Press,
A great starting point for anyone curious about q***r and trans life, and helpful for those already on their own journeys!
In this quick and easy guide to q***r and trans identities, cartoonists Mady G and Jules Zuckerberg guide you through the basics of the LGBT+ world! Covering essential topics like sexuality, gender identity, coming out, and navigating relationships, this guide explains the spectrum of human experience through informative comics, interviews, worksheets, and imaginative examples. A great starting point for anyone curious about q***r and trans life, and helpful for those already on their own journeys!
Obie is Man Enough by Schuyler Bailar
Penguin Random House,
A coming-of-age story about transgender tween Obie, who didn't think being himself would cause such a splash. For fans of Alex Gino's George and Lisa Bunker's Felix Yz.
Obie knew his transition would have ripple effects. He has to leave his swim coach, his pool, and his best friends. But it's time for Obie to find where he truly belongs.
As Obie dives into a new team, though, things are strange. Obie always felt at home in the water, but now he can't get his old coach out of his head. Even worse are the bullies that wait in the locker room and on the pool deck. Luckily, Obie has family behind him. And maybe some new friends too, including Charlie, his first crush. Obie is ready to prove he can be one of the fastest boys in the water--to his coach, his critics, and his biggest competition: himself.
Too Bright To See by Kyle Lukoff
Penguin Random House,
It’s the summer before middle school and eleven-year-old Bug’s best friend Moira has decided the two of them need to use the next few months to prepare. For Moira, this means figuring out the right clothes to wear, learning how to put on makeup, and deciding which boys are cuter in their yearbook photos than in real life. But none of this is all that appealing to Bug, who doesn’t particularly want to spend more time trying to understand how to be a girl. Besides, there’s something more important to worry about: A ghost is haunting Bug’s eerie old house in rural Vermont…and maybe haunting Bug in particular. As Bug begins to untangle the mystery of who this ghost is and what they’re trying to say, an altogether different truth comes to light–Bug is transgender.
When Aidan Became a Brother by Kyle Lukoff illustrated by Kaylani Juanita
Lee & Low Books,
When Aidan was born, everyone thought he was a girl. His parents gave him a pretty name, his room looked like a girl’s room, and he wore clothes that other girls liked wearing. After he realized he was a trans boy, Aidan and his parents fixed the parts of life that didn’t fit anymore, and he settled happily into his new life.
Then Mom and Dad announce that they’re going to have another baby, and Aidan wants to do everything he can to make things right for his new sibling from the beginning—from choosing the perfect name to creating a beautiful room to picking out the cutest onesie. But what does “making things right” actually mean? And what happens if he messes up? With a little help, Aidan comes to understand that mistakes can be fixed with honesty and communication, and that he already knows the most important thing about being a big brother: how to love with his whole self.
When Aidan Became a Brother is a heartwarming book that will resonate with transgender children, reassure any child concerned about becoming an older sibling, and celebrate the many transitions a family can experience.
Me and My Dysphoria Monster by Laura Kate Dale
Jessica Kingsley Publishers,
Nisha's monster follows her everywhere. It used to be small, but recently her monster has begun to grow. And as her monster gets bigger and bigger, Nisha feels more and more unlike herself.
When people refer to her as a boy, or when she tries to hide her true gender identity, Nisha's dysphoria monster grows larger and larger. Until, one day, Nisha meets Jack - a trans man - who shows Nisha how she can shrink her dysphoria monster back down to size.
This touching story is the perfect book for discussing gender dysphoria with children, explaining what it is and how they and their families can deal with it. It also includes an accompanying guide for parents with further information about gender dysphoria, terminology, and first-hand examples of the author's own experiences.
Between Perfect and Real by Ray Stoeve
ABRAMS Books,
Dean Foster knows he’s a trans guy. He’s watched enough YouTube videos and done enough questioning to be sure. But everyone at his high school thinks he’s a lesbian—including his girlfriend Zoe, and his theater director, who just cast him as a “nontraditional” Romeo. He wonders if maybe it would be easier to wait until college to come out. But as he plays Romeo every day in rehearsals, Dean realizes he wants everyone to see him as he really is now––not just on the stage, but everywhere in his life. Dean knows what he needs to do. Can playing a role help Dean be his true self?
The Heartbreak Bakery by A.R. Capetta
Penguin Random House,
Teenage baker Syd sends ripples of heartbreak through Austin’s q***r community when a batch of post-being-dumped brownies turns out to be magical—and makes everyone who eats them break up.
“What’s done is done.”
Unless, of course, it was done by my brownies. Then it’s getting undone.
Syd (no pronouns, please) has always dealt with big, hard-to-talk-about things by baking. Being dumped is no different, except now Syd is baking at the Proud Muffin, a q***r bakery and community space in Austin. And everyone who eats Syd’s breakup brownies . . . breaks up. Even Vin and Alec, who own the Proud Muffin. And their breakup might take the bakery down with it. Being dumped is one thing; causing ripples of q***r heartbreak through the community is another. But the cute bike delivery person, Harley (he or they, check the pronoun pin, it’s probably on the messenger bag), believes Syd about the magic baking. And Harley believes Syd’s magical baking can fix things, too—one recipe at a time.

Dive into Our List of Fall 2022 Cookbooks The key phrase for our fall cookbook roundup is “deep-dive,” and Kate Leahy (a cookbook author herself) truly went all in with write-ups of 16 new cookbooks for chefs and cooks. We compile this comprehensive list twice a year, and I love seeing the range of topics that unfold.
In honor of Pride Month, here’s a wonderful post by ABPR Publicity Associate, Alex Zumpino.
Top 5 Children’s Books About Trans Kids to Read for Pride Month 2022
Pride Month is upon us! As a transgender man, I love seeing myself represented in kid-lit. I love knowing how lucky trans kids are to have books to teach them about themselves and their friends & family. Below, I’ve shared my top five childrens’ picture book recommendations featuring trans kids for parents to read with their children for Pride 2022. All of the books mentioned are great for ages 3-8.
Small Knight and the Anxiety Monster by Manka Kasha
Feiwel & Friends,
“It’s not that being a princess is bad, it just isn’t for me”
Small Knight is supposed to be a princess according to their parents, the king and the queen/. But, they would rather go on adventures! When they realize that they’re ready to tell their parents, the anxiety monster comes to visit them. I love this book for many reasons because coming out is scary and anxiety-inducing, but seeing Small Knight conquer their fears shows other trans kids that their feelings are valid!
From the Stars in the Sky to the Fish in the Sea by Kai Cheng Thom, Wai-Yant Li, Kai Yun Ching - Arsenal Pulp Press,
Miu Lan faces many questions about who they are and who they may be. But one thing's for sure: no matter who this child becomes, their mother will love them just the same.
If the phrase “Trans is Beautiful” was a book, it would be this one. From the Stars in the Sky to the Fish in the Sea is beautiful inside and out from the illustrations to the lyrical prose teaching gender-non-conforming children that it’s okay to be themselves but also it's okay to still be figuring yourself out!
It Feels Good to Be Yourself: A Book about Gender Identity
Theresa Thorn, Noah Grigni - Henry Holt and Co.
Teaching children about gender identity is so important to help them better understand themselves and their peers. This book is a good introduction to pronouns and gender identity.
I am A Prince: An Inclusive LGBTQIA+ Children's Book
Damien Alan Lopez with Mutiara Arum (Illustrator)
Self-published,
If you want another book focused on royalty, this is a great read about a Latinx transgender prince coming out to his parents, The King and Queen, and how they communicate to make The Prince more comfortable in his body. This is a wholesome story that many trans kids and parents alike will appreciate as it shows how to be there for your child when they express their feelings of gender identity.
My Dad Thinks I'm a Boy?! By Sophie Labelle
Jessica Kingsley Publishers,
“Adults often think they can decide who children should be. But that’s not how it works!”
To wrap it up, I leave you with another book to help children (and parents) better understand themselves and their kids. The title is self-explanatory, but this is about a trans girl who recently came out and is trying to understand why her dad is having trouble understanding this. It’s a great book for trans kids and their parents to read together. But, it also talks about trans kids and their feelings.
Happy Reading and Happy Pride! 🏳️🌈
