On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were free. This news was delivered more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

Originating in Galveston, Texas, Juneteenth has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1866. It became a federal holiday in 2021.

On this Juneteenth and every day, we celebrate our Black and Brown community members. We also reaffirm our commitment to valuing the diversity of people and perspectives and striving for equity in policy and practice.

A feeling of contentment washes over me,
as I bask in the glow of the sunshine.

I decide to treat myself to a bit of shopping,
to indulge in a little retail therapy.
The bright colors and pretty displays,
lift my spirits and soothe my soul.
I browse through the aisles,
finding little treasures that bring me joy.

As I walk back out into the sunshine,
my heart is light and my mind is clear.

I am grateful for the simple pleasures,
that bring happiness and peace to my day.
