KNOW YOUR WAʻA: HAWAIIAN VALUES, PRACTICE, AND KINSHIP & HOW THEY INTERSECT
With Kumu Nicole Kanahele Stutz of Pilina ʻŌiwi

Pilina ʻŌiwi offers indigenous education with the goal of strengthening native identities through the shared Pacific Islander values of community, cultural practices, and environmental kinship. Our organization focuses on native Hawaiian lifeways and traditions to help learners build a foundation of knowledge to understand and navigate the intersection of ancestral values and western values. We support students to counter identity deficits with a strong sense of self, and hopefully provide more opportunity for personal and academic growth.

About:
Nicole Kanahele Stutz is passionate about pilina (connection) and ʻōiwi (natives) and indigenous knowledge. Nicole is kanaka maoli, native Hawaiian, a hula practitioner, and a cultural practitioner who was born and raised in Koʻolaupoko, Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi and now makes her home in Yucaipa. She attended the prestigious Kamehameha Schools, later earned a masterʻs degree in Teaching English as a Second Language, and spent her professional career teaching in the university system. Nicole serves as a cultural advisor for school districts and organizations including Crafton Hills University AANHPI and Island Grad. She is currently the director of Pilina ʻŌiwi, an organization that seeks to strengthen native identities through connection with community, environment, and practice.

LUA: HAWAIIAN MARTIAL ARTS
With Kumu Lua Michelle Mānu

About:
Michelle Mānu is internationally known for her accomplishments as a 10th Degree Black Belt, Alihikaua (General), and Kumu Lua (teacher) of the evolved indigenous Hawai’ian cultural practice and warrior art of Lua (Kaihewalu and Mānu lineages). Kumu Mānu is currently the only high-ranking female teacher of this art and currently the only public representative of a Hawai’ian woman warrior in over 200 years. She is presently the only woman to be given the designation of “Knight Commander” of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I (O’ahu Chapter), for her continued work in protecting, promoting, and perpetuating the Hawai’ian culture through the Lua.

She uses the Hula dance to teach Lua as she believes it is essential for timing, balance, placement, and micro-body movements during close-quarters combat. Kumu Mānu teaches this at UCLA, Honolulu Community College, and in her system - Nā Koa (The Warriors) and Pā Lua O Mānu. Kumu Mānu has been featured in magazines such as: Black Belt Magazine; Hawaiian Airlines Hana Hou!; Martial Arts Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow; Martial Arts Xperience; Inside Kung Fu; Sports Illustrated; and many more.

Kumu Mānu has been a legal professional for 27 years. She has earned a Juris Doctorate (JD), business credentials from George Washington University, senior executive leadership credentials from Harvard Business School, a master’s degree in Metaphysical Science (MMsc), and is a candidate for a PhD in Philosophy (2023) with an emphasis in personal transformation. Kumu Mānu also accepts offers to work regularly in the industry in shows, films, podcasts, and live television. She will make her directorial debut in 2024. Kumu Mānu has released the book, The Weaponry of the Solomon Kaihewalu Lineage, and plans to release The Woman Metaphysician-Warrior (2023) and The Butterfly Effect (2024). 🔥 Introducing 2 of our guest artists for this Sunday’s performance of Lagip:

.cinthi and Karine Cuevas are presenting works that invite the audiences to join in and integrate into the performance.

“I am not only leaving, I am also arriving. // No solo me estoy yendo, también estoy llegando” by Cinthia Duran Larrea explores memory and the threads that bind people together through gesture, story, and movement.

“Herencia” by Karine Cuevas
explores the remembrance of family and friends through rituals of borrowed garments and movement. What does it mean to carry your ancestors on your back in the threads of your clothing, and embedded within you? Herencia honors the accumulation of love, memories, and longing seated in one’s heart, placed there by loved ones.

Lagip in Ilocano translates to “remembrance.” ⚡️

We are creating in the Art Gallery Depot in Fontana, which historically had been a train depot— a place of transit— and is now a communal space housing visual artworks of local artists. This upcoming iteration of “Lagip” intends to gather and co-create through collective remembrance, real-time process, and performance.

Much of the choreography that PPG will present came from both a translation and remembrance of language and memory space; and through remembrance, hearing the voices of our loved ones.

Through dance, we emerge, converse, remember, and share our stories, connections, and ways of introduction.

Come through! There is limited capacity, so purchase your tickets asap. Link in bio.

How innovation has come into play in the journey to PPG expression is in being in the space of potential.

There is a place for everyone and everything.

When it comes to critical conversations on mental health and the migration and diaspora upbringing, creating safe ways to encourage expression and connection is part response to working through historical and micro suppressions, and part activation of re-membering ourselves and our collectivity as whole, full, and autonomous.

Dance is an activator to make stagnation move. 🌪️

With all this, we ask-
What are your stories of emergence?
Of introduction?
Of intention?

for our inaugural production on Sunday June 25 afternoon:
LAGIP: REMEMBRANCE
A site-specific immersive dance performance of activation and remembrance. Lagip is an invitation to partake in gathering at one of Fontana’s eldest community spaces to share in the layers of our collective stories.

Stay tuned for more! 🌪️

This May has been so expansive in remembrance and commemoration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander heritages and peoples.

This hyphenated space has been so lively, while also reflective of what it is to grow up in a diasporic setting. There are so many situations that bring people to where they are now. So many ancestors who speak among another through us as their descendants.

To all the stories being shared, dreamt, cared for, remembered, and becoming—
Honoring your processes and expressions.
What a gift it is to know you from within, and the journey we go through together to convey your sensibilities and visions in this light.

What does it look like to dance the voice of your ancestors?
