Bobbie Jackson Obituary - Moreno Valley, CA 04/09/2024

https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/moreno-valley-ca/bobbie-jackson-11714074

Robert Jackson

Robert Jackson is fondly remembered as Big Bob during his 34 years of service at CSDR. He worked in the residence program working mostly with middle and high school boys. He enjoyed being a sports coordinator for intramural sports program. Sports were his special interests.

Bob was an all-round athlete at Palm Springs High and selected for the All Riverside County football team as a running back in 1957. He continued his education at the Riverside Community College where he also starred in football and basketball. He was selected for the All American Community College football team in 1959. He transferred to the University of New Mexico for further education and continued his prowess in football there. He helped his team win the Sun Bowl Championship game in 1960. In 1962 Bob signed with the San Diego Chargers as a fullback. His team won the 1963 American Football League championship. He next played for the Oakland Raiders, Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints. After five seasons in the NFL, he retired from the football career and returned to Riverside for a change of career.

Bob arrived at CSDR in Fall 1967 and spent the next 34 years in the residence program. He eventually became a supervising instructional counselor. He lived in the dorm apartment for many years until 1980 when he paid $40 a month and $25 a month during summer breaks.

I remember seeing Bob play well in the staff versus varsity basketball game in the 1970s. That was because he was a basketball star at Palm Springs HS and RCC. He and John Adams played basketball every Sunday with the alumni in the old gym for fitness and enjoyment.

I remember my reaction in Fall 1970 when I shook hand with Big Bob. His hand fully covered my little hand. I was 13 years old and weighed 85. He was 6’ 3” and weighed 240. His large stature impressed me. His abdomen was hard like a wall. He is a giant with a tender heart.

He is married to Zeta, also a retired dorm counselor. They live in Moreno Valley, not far from CSDR. We hold them in our fond thoughts and wish them well in their retirement.

Message from Nick Glasgow to CSDR Alumni: Richard β€œDicky” Glasgow - Class of 1969, My Dad, died today just before 1 pm. He was a good man, loved God, his family, his 1971 VW and his dog Spot. He suffered a severe stroke in March 2021 which left him confined to bed for the past 3 years. He was a fighter and never gave up all the way to the end. He was born premature at birth and at 3 years old was diagnosed as deaf. His parents moved from Iowa to Riverside California so he could attend the School for the Deaf in Riverside (CSDR). He loved the deaf community and was very popular and loved by many in Riverside. He was a hard worker, he worked many jobs including working the back bar at the bull & mouth at UCR (where he met my mom) and working over 20 years at Luxfer in Riverside as β€œlead person” doing hydrostatic testing on SCBA bottles. He was also a constant entrepreneur always having some kind of side business or job including selling specialized fire alarm products for the deaf. He served at CSDR on many committees and fundraisers. His lifelong passion was deaf advocacy making sure the deaf had a voice. He made a difference with his life and he will be missed.
