Demodex are mites that live on the eyelashes and eyelids. These mites, specifically Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis, can inhabit the hair follicles and oil glands of the eyelashes and can cause certain eye-related conditions.

Demodex infestation in the eyes is known as ocular demodicosis or demodectic blepharitis. Blepharitis refers to inflammation of the eyelids, and when it is caused by Demodex mites, it is referred to as demodectic blepharitis.

Common symptoms of Demodex infestation in the eyes may include:

1. Itchy or irritated eyelids.
2. Redness and swelling of the eyelids.
3. Burning or stinging sensation in the eyes.
4. Crusty or sticky discharge around the eyes.
5. Eyelash loss or misdirection.
6. Dry eyes.
7. Sensitivity to light.
8. Blurred vision (in severe cases).

Treatment for Demodex on the eyes typically involves proper eyelid hygiene and the use of specific medications. Your eye care professional may recommend:

1. Eyelid scrubs or cleansers: These are used to clean the eyelid margins and remove debris, oil, and mites. They are usually applied with a clean cotton swab or a special eyelid cleaning product.

2. Topical medications: Your doctor may prescribe ointments or solutions that contain ingredients such as tea tree oil, metronidazole, or ivermectin. These medications help to kill the mites and reduce inflammation.

3. Warm compresses: Applying warm compresses to the eyelids can help loosen crusts and debris and improve symptoms.

4. Artificial tears: If you have dry eyes associated with Demodex infestation, your doctor may recommend using artificial tears to relieve eye dryness and discomfort.

It's important to follow the treatment plan prescribed by your eye care professional and maintain good eyelid hygiene to effectively manage Demodex infestation in the eyes.
