NP: STEVE TAYLOR / DANIELSON FOIL - Wow To The Deadness EP (2016) ... RIP Steve Albini. BTW I've been enamored of Taylor's music since I was a wee little kid. A new wave EP being his first and most recent offering, and there isn't a bad release in the bunch. Essential. I own everything Taylor did in every format (yes, even that one.) Go thou and spin likewise.

NP: PINK FLOYD : Atom Heart Mother (1970/2016 RI)...These 2016 were a very warm and welcome turn of events. Now one could get in all the quiet passages of without the crackles. I'll add the CD master was equally welcome. I would say it is difficult to believe an experimental LP like this was once on the pop charts (cue Taylor Swift dropping a side-long prog/orchestral suite called Taylor's Project 2025 and no one bats an eye) but it's equally marvelous Roger Waters wrote something as beautiful, mystical and pointed as "If" without an album concept to follow. (This also the reason I struggle with some of the deeper-cut Townshend works, or God forbid most of the Genesis canon.) The rest of the record is a beaut, though - "Summer 68" resynthesizing Sgt. Pepper for the hazy turn of the decade, and "Fat Old Sun" containing my all-time favorite David Gilmour lead guitar moment. Ever. High or low, Atom Heart Mother is an essential spin for me

This just in the vinyl department: Somewhere down the corner from both James Taylor and Nick Drake comes Stan Moeller with only one LP in his discography. Mellow folk rock with a few surprising chord changes and variations. "Down With Your Ship" and "City Lights" are the standouts. This NM copy of the independent 1980 LP is underpriced for both Discogs and eBay standards. Grab it here:

Personal music-making update!

The music mastering service I plan to use (for the album I'm working on) asks for the names of three comparable albums you have in mind in terms of final sound. Here's the three I'm giving them:

1. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Laminated Denim
2. Godspeed You Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven
3. Frank Zappa - Lumpy Gravy

As I said before, I'm making this music for me. 😉

But if you'd like to hear something I've already completed, My Stray Master album (from 2006) is still on Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, etc. Search for "Stray Master - Of Mice and Giraffes". That basement rock group was me and Dirk Ton .... it's kind of old now. We had a MySpace page.

U2 Reworks 40 Songs For New Album ‘Songs Of Surrender’ U2 reworked 40 of their songs for the upcoming album, ‘Songs Of Surrender.’

Hmmm... Todd Rundgren says (2022),

"But vinyl, for me, is mythological. What people think about it is not based in facts. People go on about how it’s warmer—they’ll use subjective terms like that. However, the plain fact is that the sound is worse on the inside of an LP than on the outside of the LP. That’s because you’re trying to get the same amount of sound on less and less real estate as the record plays.

While people talk about the warmness of it, they can’t seem to hear the sound getting worse for some reason, whereas I can because I’ve mastered so many records and it’s part of the process of checking out your test pressings.

So I have always preferred the digital format because no matter what you think about the so-called sound quality, it’s the same for the entire disc.

It’s true that at the very beginning of digital there were some things that they didn’t get right. They didn’t have dithering, so a record with a long fade-out would get to the end and suddenly stop. But, eventually, they figured out things like that, which solved a lot of the issues.

But I guarantee I could fool anybody into thinking something is vinyl."
