COVID 19 is on the rise again. Think COVID is a thing of the past? Think again.
After a summer surge of the virus, and as cold season approaches, attention is back on the illness, prompting questions about what to do if you test positive and how to protect yourself.
Here's what to know for fall 2024:
New COVID vaccine
Last month, the Food and Drug Administration approved updated COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna for the 2024 fall season.
Who should get the updated COVID vaccine?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are recommending that all Americans ages 6 months and older get a shot of the updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine to protect against another expected surge of the virus this fall and winter.
For most people, the CDC recommends getting a flu shot in September or October each year, which can be given at the same time as the COVID-19 vaccines.
Free COVID tests
Starting in late September, Americans will be able to get free COVID test kits mailed to their homes.

How the Much-Maligned Porch Supports Walkable, Sustainable Communities
So walking is a fundamental aspect of a place’s sustainability. Porches can serve a crucial role in the walkability of residential streets in a neighborhood, and therefore in the ultimate sustainability of the neighborhood.
Here’s why: When you design a porch that’s usable as an outdoor room, then it’s a useful part of the living space of the house. And it’s usually some of the least expensive space in the house because you don’t have to heat and cool it, and it doesn’t have walls or windows. But if it’s not useful as a living space, then a porch is just expensive decoration. Also, when someone can imagine themselves sitting on the porch, they can also imagine themselves visiting with their neighbors. If they can’t, then it’s no different from any other house in a conventional American subdivision.
How the Much-Maligned Porch Supports Walkable, Sustainable Communities Its aesthetic detractors don’t understand the porch’s ability to create community.

Fewer bees and other pollinating insects lead to shrinking crops
Many plants, from crops to carnations, cannot bear fruit or reproduce without bees, beetles, butterflies and other insects to pollinate them. But the population of insect pollinators is dropping in the U.S., due in part to pesticides, climate change, invasive plants and diminished habitats. Rachel Mallinger, assistant professor of entomology at the University of Florida, explains why these insects are in decline and how homeowners can create yards and gardens that are good for pollinators.
Fewer bees and other pollinating insects lead to shrinking crops Perhaps 90% of flowering plants require animal pollinators – and most of them are insects. But it’s not just bees doing this important work.
