Congratulations to all involved in such a successful first Season of Karate Competition. Our inaugural season of the Rochester Youth Karate League is now finalized with last Saturday's fantastic Finals. I want to thank all athletes who completed the season and committed your time to your teams and our league. Your dedication is admirable and the right thing to do when part of a team. I do hope you enjoyed yourselves and will entertain competing in our next season.
I want to thank the supportive parents that were patient with us as we learned much by trial and error to do the right things along the way. Your sacrifice will pay off in future season efforts.
I want to thank the coaches and tournament officials who by their self-sacrificing volunteerism have made an affirming impact and positive memories for their players, many who had never had any experience with karate activity before. You will be remembered longer than you know and are appreciated greatly.
The White Tigers did it! With quite confidence they overcame all obstacles to take the top spot this season. League Team Champions. Congratulations!
OUr Team Commitment Award went to Adrana Johnson who demonstrated some of the strongest spirit I have ever seen in a 7 year old. All coaches unanimously agreed that she exemplified the spirit of this award. Thank you for your efforts Adriana.
Division Winners were: Age 6 Division- Brian Carrier; Age 7-11 Division- Morgan Slavens; Age 12 Division - Raine Edwards. Great jobs everyone!
The League MVP Award went to Morgan Slavens who scored a total of 113 points for the season.
The Grand Champion Award went to Hunter LIbby with 62 total combined wins for the season. (Honorable mentions out to Mark Iordanov with 56 and Morgan Slavens with 55.)
You all have set a high bar for the next season. Each of you improved amazingly and proved to be fierce competitors. I do hope that you will keep training and choose to participate again next season.
As a reminder and as part of the Memorial Day Holiday weekend, the league practice normally scheduled for Friday nights, and the Saturday event typically scheduled are cancelled. Team and League practices will resume on Tuesday and our League Finals will be held next Saturday June 2nd! Enjoy the weekend!
Week 9 - Our Semi Finals week is now in the books. Rubber Chicken's has been eliminated for the team finals leaving 3 teams to compete in the Finals scheduled for Saturday June 2nd. Gladiators, White Tigers and Bob's Burgers will play it out for the top slot and Spring Season Championship. White Tigers led this week's event with 18 total points. Hunter leads the individual standings in sparring and kata, but not by much and will have to defend his standings fiercely in the finals.
I hope to see you all on the 3rd!
Its coming down to the wire with Semis and Finals remaining. After 8 weeks, the season results stand with Gladiators (and a strong 11 point effort from Hunter) keeping them in 1st place running. White Tigers took Week 8 however with a 36 point result and an MVP showing from Morgan this week who went 4-4 undefeated and added 6 points. The season total point getter changed this week as Hunter overtook Davonte for 1st place and 62 total points.
White Tigers won week 2 of the kata division, but Gladiators, with a strong first place standing by Hunter remains the leader after two weeks.
Stay tuned for the season ending events and the championship hunt.
It took a while to get the ladders adjusted and get the event going (sorry to those that participated as they committed to do) due to missing athletes that did not predisclose that they would not be available (April Vacation). {Thank you very much to those that did however, as it helped speed up the process for those that could make it.}
But eventually Week 6 competition was completed. Perhaps due to the necessity of combining divisions due to limited attendance, we learned the importance of controlling techniques moving forward. Coaches have been instructed to emphasize control drills during this week's practices and instruct athletes that a no-contact policy will be instituted at events moving forward. Officials will be on heightened notice to penalize any contact whether it be to target or non-target areas. This policy will be in effect until control skills are made apparent through training.
The White Tigers took top honors this week in a squeaker by besting Gladiators with one more win than they had. Point totals were tied at 20 points each! With a repeat performance from Week 5, Cameron Turpin was MVP again with an undefeated effort and 12 Points for the Black Dragons.
Season results have Gladiators in a slim 3 point lead with 186 points. Davonte Sanchez remains top point winner yet with 49 points.
WOW, WHAT A WEEK 5! Competition remains strong with lots of challenges to top players as others figure them out. Due to a new arrival of the Turpin Brothers, Cameron and Josh, who played as alternates for the Black Dragon Team, Black Dragons came in 1st this week with 12 wins and 44 pts! MVP award goes to one player this week - our newbie phenom - Cam Turpin who was the only player undefeated. He gave Black Dragons 12 points.
The season standings are tightening with Gladiators keeping the top spot BY ONE POINT! Bob's Burgers is right behind them. League leading player at Week 5 is Davonte of the Rubber Chickens with 49 points, but three players are right on his heels for top spot.
PS- A shining spot this week was the performance by our little Olivia (Age 6) of the Black Dragons who went 2 and 2 and contributed 7 points toward the League Leading Team effort! Great job Olivia!

Week 4 of our Karate League! Mixed it up a bit this week with some cross division matches. Everyone's skills are growing with some much better timing being shown. Bob's Burgers walked away with the Leader Status with 34 points. The Gladiators came a close second with 33 points.
Check out the MVP performance of Morgan, Cameron and Justin this week! All undefeated!
Season Total Results are tightening up! Bob's Burgers lead with total wins while Gladiators has a slight lead in a tight grouping with 134 points. Season Championship will be determined by the results of the top three teams. Keep your athletes playing!
Week 3 Results are in! What another great performance by everyone. Everyone getting stronger and trying new techniques. Check out the MVP performances by Davonte, Logan (Daughty) and Jacob again this week. Each were undefeated and earned 12 points for their respective teams. Great going!
Weeks 3 Team Leader - Team 1-The Rubber Chickens with 51 points and 15 total wins!
Season to Date Standings - Team 2-Gladiators remain strong - 101 Points and Bob's Burger's advances with total season wins at 33. Individual Season standings: Jacob leads with 32 total points. Davonte, Jacob and Nate all tied for total win lead at 10 each after 3 weeks. Can they hold on?
Thanks to all athletes for their continued effort. Your work is paying off. Target your competition to move ahead in the standings. Good Luck next week.
Week 2 is now in the books and though we were competing with the Music in our Schools concert that took our multi-talented musician athletes away, we had a fantastic turnout with some great performances. Four Athletes went 4 for 4 (wins/attempts). Davonte, Morgan, Nate and Brian all were undefeated and earned top points for their teams, but Nate and Brian share the MVP award this week with each earning 11 points.
See the attached Season totals for total standings. Point standings: Team 2 (68), Team 4 (54), Team 1 (37) and Team 5 (29). Win Totals: Team 4 (23), Team 3 (22), Team 2 (20) and Team 5 (12).
Week 2 Team Highlights: (Points: Tie for 1st: Team 1 & Team 4 with 26 points each) (Wins: Tie for 1st: Team 3 & Team 4 with 10 wins each.
Judges comments: "They are getting better and action is much faster". I agree!
