When you ask someone how theyāre doing, do you mean it? Like do you REALLY want to know? And when asked the same question, do you answer honestly?
The hardest things can be answering honestly and asking for help when needed.
If someone said they were anything but fine, good, or hanging in there, how do you reply? As if you truly care or do you tend to blow the answer off in your response. Meaning, do you say āoh Iām sorry to hearā, āthat stinksā, or something similar, OR do you ask āwould you like to tell me moreā? Or are you somewhere in between, saying either nothing about the reply, or just trying to rush past those words they spoke?
All of us need to do a better job HEARING what another human is saying. Maybe you canāt DO something to help but allowing space to LISTEN to what another is experiencing or feeling, or their point of view or struggle is ā¦ that is what makes human connection.
We all have struggles. We all have bad days, weeks or periods in life. But what will you do to support someone elseās struggles? Nothingā¦ or will you be the difference in their day, and maybe their life? Will you be the person YOU would need if you were struggling?
I know first hand how scary the can be.
You donāt have to navigate it alone.
Remember-
You are important,
You are loved,
And you are NEVER ALONE
TGIF!! Here are some affirmations for you to say over the weekend.
Affirmations change us. Gratitude changes us.
Be the change you seek.
April is Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month:
Unveiling Esophageal Cancer: Symptoms and Facts
By Jenni Daniel, BSN, RN
Esophageal cancer is a powerful adversary, often diagnosed at advanced stages due to its subtle symptoms. Understanding it is crucial for early detection and effective management.
What is Esophageal Cancer?
The esophagus, a muscular tube connecting the throat to the stomach, is susceptible to cancerous growth. Esophageal cancer occurs when cells lining the esophagus mutate, forming tumors. Two primary types exist: adenocarcinoma, typically found in the lower portion, and squamous cell carcinoma, prevalent in the upper part.
Symptoms:
1. Dysphagia: Difficulty swallowing, especially solid foods, is a hallmark symptom. As the tumor obstructs the esophagus, swallowing becomes progressively challenging.
2. Weight Loss: Unintentional weight loss often accompanies esophageal cancer due to difficulty eating and decreased appetite.
3. Pain: Pain or discomfort behind the breastbone or in the throat may occur, worsening with swallowing.
4. Heartburn or Indigestion: Persistent heartburn or indigestion, despite treatment, warrants investigation, as it might indicate esophageal irritation or inflammation.
5. Regurgitation: Food or liquid returning to the throat or mouth after swallowing is another warning sign.
6. Hoarseness or Cough: Changes in voice quality or a chronic cough may result from esophageal tumors pressing on nearby structures.
Risk Factors:
1. To***co and Alcohol Use: Heavy smokers and drinkers face elevated risks, especially when both habits are combined.
2. Obesity: Excess body weight increases the likelihood of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma.
3. Acid Reflux: Chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) raises the risk of esophageal cancer, particularly adenocarcinoma.
4. Dietary Factors: Low intake of fruits and vegetables and diets high in processed foods and red meat may contribute to esophageal cancer risk.
5. Age and Gender: Esophageal cancer is more common in older adults and men.
Prevention and Early Detection:
1. Healthy Lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol consumption, and avoiding to***co can mitigate risk.
2. Regular Screening: Individuals with risk factors or persistent symptoms should undergo screening tests, such as endoscopy, to detect abnormalities early.
3. Dietary Modifications: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may reduce the risk of esophageal cancer.
Conclusion:
Esophageal cancer presents daunting challenges, but awareness of its symptoms and risk factors empowers individuals to seek timely medical attention. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes, underscoring the importance of vigilance and proactive health management. By understanding its nuances and embracing preventive measures, we can combat this disease effectively.
April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month:
Shedding Light on Testicular Cancer: Symptoms and Facts
By Jenni Daniel, BSN, RN
Testicular cancer, though relatively rare compared to other cancers, predominantly affects young men. Understanding its symptoms and risk factors is pivotal for early detection and successful treatment.
What is Testicular Cancer?
Testicular cancer originates in the testicles, the male reproductive glands responsible for producing s***m and testosterone. It usually begins as an abnormal growth or tumor in one or both testicles.
Symptoms:
Lump or Swelling: The most common sign is a painless lump or swelling in the testicle. It may be detected during self-examination or noticed by a partner.
Pain or Discomfort: Some men may experience a dull ache or discomfort in the lower abdomen or sc***um, often mistaken for a minor injury or infection.
Changes in Size or Shape: Any noticeable changes in the size, shape, or consistency of the testicles should prompt medical evaluation.
Heaviness in the Sc***um: A feeling of heaviness or dragging sensation in the sc***um can indicate the presence of a tumor.
Fluid Accumulation: Accumulation of fluid in the sc***um, known as hydrocele, might accompany testicular cancer, causing swelling and discomfort.
Risk Factors:
Age: Testicular cancer is most common in young and middle-aged men, with the highest incidence occurring between the ages of 15 and 35.
Cryptorchidism: Undescended testicles, a condition in which one or both testicles fail to descend into the sc***um during fetal development, increases the risk of testicular cancer.
Family History: Men with a family history of testicular cancer, especially in a father or brother, have a higher risk.
Personal History: Individuals who have previously had testicular cancer in one testicle are at increased risk of developing it in the other.
Race/Ethnicity: White men have a higher risk of testicular cancer compared to men of other racial or ethnic backgrounds.
Prevention and Early Detection:
Self-Examination: Regular testicular self-examination is crucial for early detection. Men should familiarize themselves with the normal size, shape, and consistency of their testicles and promptly report any abnormalities to a healthcare provider.
Medical Check-ups: Routine physical examinations, including testicular examination, can help detect abnormalities early.
Prompt Medical Attention: Any persistent symptoms or changes in the testicles should be evaluated promptly by a healthcare professional.
Conclusion:
Testicular cancer, though relatively uncommon, can have significant implications for affected individuals. Awareness of its symptoms, risk factors, and the importance of early detection empowers men to take proactive steps towards their health. By promoting self-examination, routine medical check-ups, and prompt reporting of any concerns to healthcare providers, we can enhance the chances of detecting and treating testicular cancer effectively.
