PRESS RELEASE
HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION
On May 5, 2024 at approximately 4:35am, the Moline Police Department responded to a 911 call of an unknown problem at a residence in the 1800 block 31st Street, Moline. Officers arrived and made entry to the residence. Inside the basement, police located two males, one 20 years old and one 17 years old, both of Moline, deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.
Police secured the scene and have been working a criminal investigation which is still ongoing.
Police had also responded to this location earlier in the night. At around 2:30am, the police responded to a noise complaint after a caller reported a large house party and unruly behavior. Numerous individuals left the area prior to police arrival and the noise had ended. Police do believe this call is related to the homicides that occurred a while later.
The incident is under investigation by the Moline Police Department Criminal Investigation Division.
This is not a random incident and witnesses or those with knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the incident will be critical to a swift resolution to this case. The police department has numerous detectives working on this
case, including interviewing witnesses and canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and video.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers of the Quad Cities at 309-762-9500, use the P3 Tips smartphone app, or the Moline Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 309-797-0401.
Additionally, Moline Police are asking anyone with video or photo evidence to submit directly to our online Community Portal. A QR code is attached to this release and a camera phone will take you directly to the site.
“The tragic events that have unfolded in our community this past weekend are a sobering reminder that we have work to do in helping our young people to turn away from violence. As a parent, my heart grieves for the losses multiple families and friends feel at this time. As mayor, I stand with our police who are working to deliver justice, and who consistently walk in partnership with community institutions to help our children make the best decisions they can. I call on all of us to reinvest in the work of building up the lives of our youth and our community so we can all live full and productive lives,
together, “ said Mayor Sangeetha Rayapati.

DRIVER INVOLVED IN DEATH OF DEKALB COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE DEPUTY RELEASED FROM JAIL WITH PRETRIAL RELEASE CONDITIONS.
Nathan P. Sweeney of DeKalb, IL who was arrested last week for Reckless Homicide and DUI in connection with the Line of Duty Death of DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) Deputy Christina Musil was released from custody this afternoon after the Court set pretrial release conditions.
Obviously, we are very disappointed that Sweeney was released despite the Dekalb County States’ Attorney request to detain. This evaluation was made under the Pretrial Fairness Act, which went into effect 9/18/23, that was a part of the SAFE T Act passed in January 2021.
