*Daniel Shaw Haight’s house in no longer there.
“Built in 1837 in the northeast corner State and Madison streets: now standing on the northeast corner of Second and Walnut Streets. The first session of the circuit court was held in this house.”
Daniel Shaw Haight came here on April 9th in 1835. He decided upon a tract of land on the East Bank of Rockford.
His wife Mary and her sister Abigail were the first women to settle in Winnebago County.
Daniel Shaw Haight put up a tent under a burr oak tree in the 1830s. This is the 1st house that was built on the East side. It was on the northeast corner of State and Madison Streets. ( Madison was called Main Street back then ).
The house was pioneer style without the use of a nail. The main part was 18 feet square built out of oak logs.
Daniel Haight was Rockford’s first Post Master and the first Sherriff here.
