Rockland was settled by European settlers, as a northeastern region of neighboring Abington in 1673. The town separated and incorporated as Rockland on March 9, 1874. It is named for the town's rocky nature, which was better suited for mills and industry than for farming. Histori

Emergency shelter update: 10/17/2023 Board of Selectmen meeting...

10/13/2023

The Town of Rockland was notified on Thursday October 12, 2023 that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has reserved rooms at one (1) local hotel to provide emergency shelter to unhoused families with children, and pregnant individuals. At this time, there are seven (7) families currently being supported in Rockland. We anticipate that over the coming days more families will arrive.

The Town is working closely with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Regional Response Coordinator assigned to our town to help oversee the day-to-day operations of the shelter. We will also be receiving support from the Massachusetts National Guard to help assist with food delivery, transportation for important appointments, help accessing medical care and connecting families with needed personal care items such as diapers, baby formula and cribs, etc.

Additionally, the Rockland School Department is working closely with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, as some of these families may have school-aged children.

We are grateful that our neighboring towns have reached out to Rockland to offer assistance helping these families in need feel welcome. Our Fire, Police, Building, Health and School Departments are all working collectively to make sure our local government is prepared to provide safety and support for these families. And I am confident that our community at large will come together to embrace this opportunity to support these families that have followed the legal process to seek asylum in our country.

Sincerely,

Douglas Lapp
Town Administrator

On Saturday September 9, 2023 the Board of Selectmen and Town Administrator will honor the men and women in the Rockland Police Department at its annual "Rockland Police Appreciation Day." At 11:30am on Sept. 9th, Rockland Police Officers will gather in front of the Police Station for a group photo and will hear a few remarks from our local officials.
