I hope that this Essay by a Republican Women Scholarship recipient will give you hope for the future and leave you inspired to get out to Vote - and take friends with you!
Essay on Voting by 2024 Republican Women Scholarship recipient Isabella Ruffo:

20 months and 11 days ago, I was told one of the saddest statements I had ever heard. During that time I was preparing to be a student pollworker for the first time in the November 2022 election. I had the pleasure of working with Frances White, but she told me this one very sad thing. And that was to bring a book or homework or something to do because the polls get really slow sometimes. Today I am asked to speak on voter turnout and registration and why these things are important in democracy.

But before we delve into the reasons why the vote is important, a quick clarification: We live in a special kind of democracy, a constitutional, representative one. This is what distinguishes us from a traditional style of democracy that founding father Ben Franklin would depict as two wolves and lamb voting on what to eat for lunch. Instead, we have protections like the Constitution, Bill of Rights and Electoral College, which insure that the innocent life of the amb is not up for grabs.

With this understanding, voter turnout and registration are important in this democratic system we have, because voting is the power of the people, a tool for turnover and the impetus for involvement.

Firstly, voting is the power of the people. The vote is our voice, as the American people. The Constitution, the document that established the structure for our government back in 1789, even begins with these words:

"We the people of the United States in order to form a more Perfect Union, establish Justice, insure Domestic Tranquility, provide for the Common Defense, promote the General Welfare and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United states of America."

We the people are who established the Constitution and our structure of government! We the people are represented by those in government, because we the people are who elect our leaders. Our unique government system, like none other in history, gives a great amount of power back to The people. Ultimately, our elected officials are accountable to the people who elected them. Ideally we would want a little more accountability, but in comparison to the European monarchies during the Age of Imperialism, the dynasties in Medieval Asia and the communist dictators of the modern era, the American vote system is truly unique in the power it gives to each and every citizen of our country.

Secondly, voting is a tool for turnover. The vote is how we, as the everyday populace create change and turnover in our government system. We are seeing this currently with the House District 33 race. When the people do not approve of what the incumbent is doing, a new Leader can rise up to more accurately represent the wishes of the people.

Through the vote System, the American people can join together in one voice and reaffirm the values that we as a community believe!

Finally, voting is the impetus for involvement on the part of the people.
The founding father James Madison pulled out this point in particular, specifically in regard to political parties. Madison contended that the vote and the political parties within it, or factions as he called them, force the citizenry to make a choice and stand by that choice. Those who vote cannot stand behind a mask of neutrality, but are invested in the choice that they have made at the polls, creating a people who would tend to think more about who they vote for.

Again, citizen Involvement could certainly be better, but think about the countries currently experiencing military coups and the resulting military state and dictatorship. Those people don't get to vote like we do, they couldn't even get involved if they wanted to! Their voices are certainly not heard. In America, the right to vote, the right to choose, and the right to stand behind one's choice is unique and crucial to preserving our liberty.

The key to all of this is that the vote must be handled accurately and wisely, in the counting of the votes, security of the systems, and the information of the voters. An unrestricted, Insecure and uneducated system destroys the power the vote once gave.

In conclusion, the vote brings the power, voice and involvement for the citizens of America if used wisely. Voter registration enables citizens to vote and voter turnout enables the Vote to have impact. If we don't use this voice that we have, we will eventually lose it.

One of the saddest things I have ever heard is the encouragement for a pollworker to bring something to do when it gets slow. It gets slow when people don't vote! When people don't exercise their right that many in this world don't get the privilege to even think about doing!

So I encourage you, get out and vote in the election coming up May 20-24 and 28th. Invite your Friends to do so as well! Get out and make us pollworkers busy! So busy that we can't read that book! So busy that we can't do that homework! So busy that we can't even talk about the number of seams in the flooring or the prettiest way to arrange all our many colorful signs!

Election workers, you know exactly what I mean. Exercise your crucial right that over half of the American people don't use, this impetus for involvement, this tool for turnover, this power of the people.

Thank you Rockwall Republican Women's club for allowing me to speak and gifting me this scholarship!
