Oswald Schmid, CEO and member of our Board of Directors, will retire on 31 August 2023 after having led the company successfully over the past three years. The Board of Directors has appointed Yves Kerstens as CEO. Yves was already a member of the Bekaert Group Executive and was Divisional CEO of Bekaert’s Specialty Businesses. The appointment takes effect on 1 September 2023.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Annie Xu-Huhmann as Divisional CEO Rubber Reinforcement, and a member of Bekaert’s Group Executive, effective March 1, 2023.

Annie brings diverse experience across business development and general management leadership roles in both Europe (11 years) and in China (13 years) and has a strong track record in developing strategic partnerships. She joins Bekaert from ThyssenKrupp Elevator and spent much of her career within the energy sector, including with General Electric, Siemens and Schneider Electric.

Bekaert has been rewarded a B-score in the 2022 Climate Change ratings by CDP. We achieved progress on all 11 categories, outperforming the activity average on all but two. This CDP score underlines the progress that we have been making to meet our science-based carbon reduction targets that have just been validated by SBTi.

CDP allows companies to track progress towards environmental stewardship and stakeholders to compare our commitment with peers. This in turn shows suppliers, customers, investors and other interested stakeholders that we take our climate ambitions seriously and act upon them.

Yesterday, Bekaert Rubber Reinforcement lifted the veil of its Vietnam plant with the first shipment to a customer.

Bekaert continues its expansion in South East Asia to address the growth perspectives for steel cord in the region and overseas markets. By adding a new presence in Vietnam, we believe we can further enhance the supply and service to our tire customers – better together!

We are proud to share the great news that on September 15, Bekaert was granted the Advanced Performer in Decarbonization of the 6th Sustainable Business Awards by the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China.

Chris Ma, Bekaert Sustainability Lead North Asia, had the honor to accept this great recognition from Bénédicte Vandorpe, Deputy Consul General of Belgium in Shanghai.

This award truly showcases the work the teams have been doing towards achieving our sustainability ambition; leading the way on low-carbon transformation, responding to climate change, and taking steps on the road to carbon net zero by 2050.

As one of the many activities taking place during the Bekaert International Health & Safety week 2022, the Bekaert Van Buren team organized a cleanup event on Lake Lou Emma in Van Buren, Arkansas (US).

Every year 11 billion kilos of plastic end up in oceans due to a continuous inflow via rivers and canals. Lakes, though not connected to the sea, are also water areas where plastic and other trash pollution affect the water quality and biodiversity of fauna and flora – both in and alongside the basins and the connected creeks.

The event was a nice example of the many Bekaert sustainability and community engagement initiatives in action, with great support of:
🌎 Keep Van Buren Beautiful, whose mission is to beautify and improve the community through voluntary partnerships with citizens, governments and business
🌭 SmokyB’s BBQ, for the catering

Yesterday, Bekaert kicked off its first River Clean Up event on the river Scheldt and its stream banks in Bossuit, near to Bekaert’s Headquarters in Belgium. One hour on the boat and walking the river banks resulted in … 71.1 kg trash collection!
