as exciting as it is to find a birds nest, it can be both illegal to move or relocate it and can also carry over 60 diseases, many of which are transmissible and harmful to humans.
It is important to do research before handling a birds nest in your area and to wear gloves and/or wash your hands thoroughly after touching it.
this sweet, little, empty nest was found on a large tree that had fallen (tree in photos) and split due to a harsh winter storm we had a few weeks ago. no eggs or activity were found in or around the nest and it was located in an area unsafe for future occupants.
if you find a birds nest or baby birds, please look into what to do for your specific situation. sometimes *not* intervening is the best thing you can do. 🐣
we had such a blast at the Rewilding Kids meetup yesterday!
climbing trees, finding nature treasures, learning names of flowers, picking up our finished pottery pieces and spending some fun, special time together outside.
here’s to a happy spring and more opportunities for quality rewilding.🫶🏻

when we allow our children to explore, search and play on their own, they end up learning even more.
especially when that play is outside! ☀️

turkey vultures sometimes sit with their wings spread in the morning as a way to thermoregulate and stay dry!
spread-wing postures (or sunbathing/wing-drying) help with both thermoregulation and drying in turkey vultures. these birds maintain their body temperature at a lower level at night than in the daytime so their body does not go into shock from a cold night. morning wing-spreading gives turkey vultures the opportunity to absorb warmth from the sun, raising their temperature to the daytime level. ☀️
