Waterkeeper Alliance strengthens and grows a global network of grassroots leaders protecting everyone’s right to clean water.
The Waterkeeper movement was started by a band of blue-collar fishermen on New York’s Hudson River in 1966. Their tough, grassroots brand of environmental activism sparked the river’s miraculous recovery and inspired others to launch local Waterkeeper groups around the world. Today, Waterkeeper Alliance unites more than 300 Waterkeeper Organizations and Affiliates that are on the frontlines of the

🦪🌊 It’s National Oyster Day! 🌊🦪
Join us in honoring the humble oyster, a small but mighty protector of our global waterways. These incredible creatures play a crucial role by filtering and cleaning water, providing vital habitats, improving the health of our ecosystems, and supporting local economies.
Healthy oyster reefs also help combat the impacts of climate change by acting as natural barriers against storms and tides in coastal communities, helping to prevent erosion and safeguard delicate estuaries.
Here’s to celebrating these amazing mollusks and their vital contributions to our environment!

Thank you Senator Merkley and Senator Mullin for working to elevate the issue of /6PPD-q, a chemical commonly found in tires that gets into our waterways through stormwater runoff.
Waterkeeper Alliance and 30 Waterkeeper groups sent a letter to the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works to raise concerns about one of the most potent aquatic toxicants ever seen!
Today at 2:30 pm/EST the Committee will hold a hearing to examine the dangerous impacts of this toxic contamination on our environment.
We urge our leaders in Congress to act with urgency and eliminate 6PPD from future tire production. The health of our ecosystems and communities depends on it.

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) recently submitted a budget request for PFAS cleanup at military installations. Despite the many dangers PFAS present, the DoD is only asking for $1.6 billion, with less than $300 million allocated for PFAS cleanup. However, the Pentagon’s own estimate suggests that $38 billion will be needed to remove these toxic forever chemicals. At that rate, it would take DoD roughly 126 years to clean up PFAS contamination.
It should not take ‘forever’, or even more than a century, for the U.S. government to clean up these ‘forever chemicals.’
