Every 9 seconds, an individual in the United States experiences a brain injury and is the #1 killer and disabler of Canadians under the age of 40. When there is a brain injury, it impacts everything you do! However, there are numerous misunderstandings and knowledge gaps within the general population regarding this issue.
There are two types of brain injury:
- Traumatic (TBI) - caused from a blow, shaking or strong rotational injury to head
- Acquired (ABI) - caused from hereditary or degenerative causes such as a stroke or tumor
The most important things to remember about brain injuries:
1. A person with a brain injury is a person first.
2. No two injuries are exactly the same.
3. The effects of the injury are complex and vary greatly from person to person.
4. The effects of the injury depend on factors such as cause, location, and severity.

May is Stroke Awareness Month, serving as a reminder that stroke continues to remain the fifth leading cause of death and a significant contributor to adult disability.
Top 3 things to prevent strokes are:
1. Maintain a healthy lifestyle: This includes eating a balanced diet low in saturated fats, cholesterol, and salt. Engage in regular physical activity, maintain a healthy weight, and avoid to***co and excessive alcohol consumption.
2. Control high blood pressure: High blood pressure is a significant risk factor for stroke. Monitoring blood pressure regularly, following medical advice, taking prescribed medications as directed, and making lifestyle changes to manage blood pressure can help reduce the risk of stroke.
3. Manage other health conditions: Managing conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and atrial fibrillation can also help lower the risk of stroke. Following a healthcare provider’s recommendations, taking medications as prescribed, and making necessary lifestyle changes can contribute to stroke prevention.
May is !
