Sometimes my most favorite jobs, are not necessarily the big and flashy projects, but rather the smaller simpler ones that have a huge impact on a homeowner's life. This little gem was one of those. With the removal of the wall between the original kitchen and the main living area, the space suddenly feels brighter and more open connecting the two areas. My favorite part was when the homeowner, a single mom of a young teenage daughter, shared with me that she loved her new island/peninsula and that she and her daughter have had some wonderful bonding mother-daughter conversations at that area. My heart warmed when she told me that. Good design connects people. 🥰

Bad design and remodeling can be very scary, and not just on Halloween!!! Not sure what's worse: the fact that the homeowner tore this kitchen apart before having a design and cabinets ready (their project is going to take that much longer without a kitchen!!) or that the previous owner "glued" the walls with bead board damaging the drywall with little solution other to go over it again with something similar, or tear out and install all new drywall! before you start your next project!

Here's a blast from the past! Worked on this job 6 years to update this 90's dated layout and style. Before and After's are pretty easy to tell apart from each other! We opened the wall where the original double oven was to create a pony-wall into the adjoining room, rather than having it closed off and separated! The custom cabinets were a cherry veneered door with custom appliance panels . Was quite the transformation!

Mari is a believer that form follows function, but that each space is unique for each individual homeowner. For each project, she takes the viewpoint of a problem solver; what is the real issue with the space? Is it dated, is it non-functional, is it an aesthetic issue, is there an architectural element to work around, is budget a driving factor? She tries to listen to a client and understand what the overall outcome is they want for their space and the remodeling process. It’s for this reason that she was awarded Best of Houzz for Customer Service for 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022.

Mari Margaret’s design inspiration comes from all facets and experiences of her life, whether it’s a trip to the Detroit Institute of Art or a walk in the park, a hike along a lake shore collecting stones, or spending time at a music festival, she’s constantly looking at textures and colors around her and how they play and interact with each other. She loves being influenced by past architecture and has found that some of her favorite projects have involved designing, restoring, and preserving historical homes in the Metro Detroit area.

When she’s not using a tape measure on a jobsite, she is often working on her own home improvement projects! She enjoys cooking and hiking, and exploring the Upper Peninsula, but can most often be found walking her 4-year-old chihuahua, Tito, around the Royal Oak area.
