ABS Update – August
Greetings to the Churches and our brothers and sisters in the faith. At the time of my writing this report, we are one week away from being finished with the Summer Quarter (8/15), and turning our attention to the quickly approaching Fall Quarter. I have enjoyed taking the students through the book of Hebrews this summer, as well as helping them work through the book Defending Your Faith on Thursday evenings. We have had as many as fifteen (15) students joining us during our summer studies, which has been a great encouragement to me with students leaving for the summer, working jobs, or going to camps. To know that we have that many students still desiring to be a part of this ministry and maintain their connection to the ABS during the Summer is a blessing. We also have a leadership team of twelve (12) students that help to coordinate, plan, and execute our events each quarter, and I am tremendously thankful for their commitment to the ministry of ABS.
As I mentioned in my update last month, we have several “Welcome Week” events and meals planned for the beginning of the Fall Quarter. Some of you reached out and asked about helping sponsor some of those and I am very thankful for your willingness to do so. At this moment we have about three of our meals sponsored, but we are in need of having at least three more covered. We will also be tailgating the first Louisiana Tech Bulldogs home game of the season on August 31st, as the Nicholls Colonels come to Ruston to open the season. We plan on grilling hot dogs to pass out to students and fans that come out for the game. We will set up and start serving around 5 PM and kickoff is set for 7PM. If your church or young people would like to come out and join us, we would love your help with this outreach event. Hopefully, we will be able to do to this for all of the Saturday home games this Fall, and would definitely appreciate your support in making this happen.
The purpose of the ministry of the ABS at Louisiana Tech is to engage students on the campus with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to help disciple them in the faith, and send them out from here with a passion and a zeal for the Glory of God. We want to engage them where they are. Whether that be at ball games, on campus, or in fraternity/sorority houses. We want to engage them whether or not they are national or international students. We, as churches and Christians, are aware of the issues happening on college campuses across the country. However, at La Tech we have an incredible opportunity to fight back against all the chaos with the one true hope of all the world, The Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is what we want to be committed to more than anything else. And we need your partnership to accomplish it. Everything we will be doing is for the purpose of engaging, getting know, and sharing the Gospel with young people so they can leave college not just with a degree, but with the knowledge of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the tools to grow in that relationship with Him daily. Please pray for us! Pray for the Gospel to go out from this place and to the students of La Tech. Pray for the hearts and minds of students to be prepared to hear and believe the Gospel. Pray for myself, my wife (Jessica), and our leaders here at the ABS to be willing and excited about sharing the Gospel and developing discipleship relationships with new and existing students. Email any and all of your questions or thoughts to me at [email protected]. I would love to come to your churches and share the work with your people face to face if you would like me to. Thank you for this incredible opportunity to make Christ’s Name known to the students of Louisiana Tech. May God bless the churches of the BMA of Louisiana.
In Christ,
Jason Goodwin

The latest update about our ministry here at Louisiana Tech and in Ruston…
Greetings in the name of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. I am thankful for each and every opportunity that I have to update the churches of Louisiana on the work of the Association of Baptist Students ministering on the campus of Louisiana Tech in Ruston, LA. As I type this update, we are preparing for our third orientation week of the summer, and the students have just completed the first session of the Summer Quarter.
Last weekend, we held our officers meeting and made plans for the Fall Quarter. “Welcome week” begins on Labor Day (September 2nd), but students will be moving in prior to that week. August 28th is the first day students will be allowed to move onto campus, and since Food Services will not be available that week, we want to help out the incoming students by providing lunches Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. If your church would like to sponsor or help supply lunch for those days, please email me at our new ABS email [email protected] .
“Welcome Week” will also come with its own special events aimed at reaching out to new and returning students. We will have meals each day of that week as well, beginning Tuesday. If your church, a Sunday School class, or Small Group would be willing to help us with these special events and meals, it would be of great help to our efforts at making contacts for the ABS.
There is no doubt that the Fall Quarter is a busy season packed with ABS events, Tech football, and new students adjusting to college life. We want to use this time to establish relationships with students that will hopefully last lifetime, and not just their four (or more!) years of college life. I want to thank all of you who have been giving faithfully to the ministry of ABS. Without your support, we could not and would not exist. THANK YOU! July 15th my family and I will, Lord willing, get moved in to our house in Ruston, and get even more settled in the work that God has called us to do there. Many of you know of our intention of planting a local BMA church in Ruston, too, and we greatly desire your prayers as those efforts begin. First Baptist Church Magnolia, AR is our sending church, and we have also been approved as North American Church Planters by the BMAA Missionary Advisory Committee. These two works are incredibly important for the campus of Louisiana Tech and the town of Ruston. In our flesh we know that we are incapable of achieving these lofty goals, but by the Spirit and the Word and the prayers of the Saints and the Churches we firmly believe we can do great things for the Glory of God! As William Carey said while preaching Isaiah 54, “Expect GREAT things FROM God, and Attempt GREAT things FOR God!” Grace and Peace to you.
In Christ,
Jason Goodwin
