Pics from the second meeting of The Humanities and Religious Studies Student club. This is a passionate group of students with great ideas making the department proud. Our team of students and faculty are making it happen!
We’ve posted this before, but can’t resist 😁
If we all thought this way, we might be kinder to one another.
There’s an irony in the speech below as it came from a general and former US President , but it is no less true.
It is a reminder that without introspective critique of power and the beauty and healing nature of the arts and culture, there is little chance for change. This is what we teach. Our students are passionate and want to see and be part of change, but we are challenged by the forces that dismiss knowledge and choose greed and fear the nuance of intellectual engagement:
“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.”
-President Dwight D. Eisenhower (d. 1969)

New SWANA Center holds grand opening at Sacramento State The New Southwest Asian and North African Center celebrated its opening with traditional performances and cultural displays.
Wonderful grand opening event for the new SacState SWANA center. Proud to say that our department has been an early supporter of the center and hopes to continue collaborating on events. The Center is a wonderful addition to our campus community run by Sahar Razavi(seen in this video). Special shout out to HRS lecturer faculty member Amnah Salameh, who is working as the SWANA center faculty coordinator!

Successful fall kickoff event with majors, minors, grad students and faculty. We’re building a strong community of scholars, who through an understanding of cultural production, will work toward positive change in this challenging place we call “humanity.” Our students are exceptional. They come to us with intellect and passion. In our best moments, we as faculty cultivate and help them build what is already there.

Sacramento State President Luke Wood announced that the campus and its five auxiliaries will refrain from investments in, “corporations that profit from genocide, ethnic cleansing and activities that violate fundamental human rights,” on Tuesday, according to revised policies from the president.
The policy change comes eight days after a pro-Palestine encampment began in the Library Quad. Earlier on Tuesday, about 100 students marched across campus to Sacramento Hall.
Sac State is the first CSU to announce divestment.

Amazing news! The generosity of our donors helped blow last year out of the water. We ended the day with 27 donors, unlocking $300 extra in honor of our students. With your help we raised a total of $5,340, an amazing four times last year’s amount.
Thanks to the Support of the College of Arts &Letters, our fundraising efforts equal 22% of all College donors and 25% of the College’s total dollars raised. We are so delighted to contribute to the college’s success.
Finally, your donations helped unlock $3750 in challenges for other important university areas: The Arts and Letters challenge, the Hornet Family Milestones challenge, and the Faculty and Staff Support challenge.
Thank you all for making this Give Sac State Day an exceptional success. Your dedication and support reinforce the importance of our educational and societal mission in this challenging time.
HRS is Truly Mighty in Spirit!
Our Donors are awesome. We hit 22 so far, which unlocked $200 in honor of our students. We need 4 more donations to get us to 1 better than last year’s 25, which will unlock another $50 for our students. Let’s make it happen! HRS is small in numbers, but mighty in spirit😊
Wow because of our amazing donors we’ve hit 19 donors. One more donor and we activate the $200 award.
Woohoo, we hit 12 donations. $50 bonus has been met. Next level is 20 donations for a $200 boost. Remember even $5 or $10 helps!
Well lovers of the Humanities and cultural exploration, we are at 11 donations. Help us hit 12 for our first milestone and a $50 bump.
Hey everyone, we’ve reached 8 donations! When we hit 12, there will be a $50 match! Remember you don’t have to give a lot to make an impact. No donation is too small 😀
Help us get there. Last year we had 25.
Hi Friends,
Sacramento State University is running. It’s fundraising day today until tomorrow at 11:59 PM. We are trying to raise money for our department of Humanities in Religious Studies. As many of you might know departments in the humanities and religious studies are being downsized or removed. Right now, California legislation is taking away two humanities related courses from the general education pattern, which will further reduce our ability to educate our students in cross-cultural understanding, and appreciation of the arts. We are also facing a 5 to 10 percent reduction in our operating budget. Last year we managed to stretch the limited funds we raised. The funds enabled us to provide a more accommodating study space for our students, an instructional student assistant position, needed supplies for faculty, travel funds and registration fees. The amount you donate is just as important as the number of donations we receive. The number of donations has a lot of symbolic value as it helps us show the university and the California legislature the reach and importance of the humanities. As you can imagine, we worry about the longevity of our program, given all the cuts. This year we are hoping to also use the funds raised to provide a library of course books for our students who cannot afford the additional costs. Thanks for considering a donation.
Thanks
Harvey
PS - Last year we raised $1250, but despite being one of the smallest department on campus, we had the second largest # of donations. Help us get there again. We currently have one $18 donation.
