ORWELL, GEORGE
Kolgosp Tvarin [Animal Farm]. Munich: Vidavnitstvi Prometei, [1947]. One of the earliest international translations of Animal Farm, most copies of which are thought to have been destroyed when they fell into the hands of the Soviet/Ukrainian authorities. The special preface by Orwell is an account of his early life, his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, his views on Stalinism and the Soviet regime, and his belief in the Socialist movement.
One of 26 window posters I’ll be offering up next week. New Process Electro Corp, NY., 1916. 26”x19”. Artist unknown. The “James Cartoons” began in 1916 as a series of weekly patriotic posters that NYC businesses could display in their shop windows to entice customers. Unlike more typical patriotic posters of the era, these window posters were very busy, full-color cartoons. Prior to America's entry into the war in 1917, the posters served an informational role about the European conflict; later they were used to help support the war effort and sale of War Savings Stamps and Liberty Bonds. The series continued after the war into 1921. Later subjects included foreign policy and national politics.

Today (July 28) being Rudy Vallee’s 122d birthday, let’s unearth a small treasure. Cartoonist/filmmaker Winsor McCay was attending one of the singer’s shows and inscribed this menu to Vallee’s older brother William. The sketch reprises principal characters from McCay’s masterpiece Little Nemo in Slumberland. Co-signed by Rudy at lower right.
