Sometimes an elbow is the most practical way to get lasting results! There's a misconception that Deep Tissue Massage has to hurt in order to work, but it's actually possible to work on the deeper layers of the muscle without causing any pain.
In short, the key to a successful Deep Tissue Massage is to be able to breathe deeply throughout the session. If the pressure is so intense that you have to hold your breath to get through the massage, then you might be doing more harm than good.
Don't hesitate to communicate with your massage therapist to let them know if the pressure is too much for your comfort level!
Let's talk about Rotator Cuff pain -- it always amazes me to find out that the majority of my clients have never received focused massage work in this area prior to working with me.
In short, these are the muscles that are helping to stabilize your shoulder joint when your arm is forward or up above your head. They're also extremely active in balancing your shoulder joint while you sleep on your side.
In other words, if you're working at a computer for long hours or prefer to sleep on your side, it's very likely that trigger points in your rotator cuff are causing you some degree of discomfort.
For pain that is persistent, it's important for you to consult a doctor and perhaps even get imaging done to rule out a muscle tear, but in general, the majority of people that I meet are experiencing rotator cuff pain due to chronic overuse.
If you suspect that your rotator cuff could be suffering from chronic overuse, I highly recommend Trigger Point Therapy. It's also important that you don't neglect "external rotation exercises" for the shoulder since part of the problem stems from a muscular imbalance (ie, we perform a lot of forward actions in our day-to-day lives, but often times we forget to strengthen the muscles in our back to promote balance).
Cupping Therapy is a great way to reduce recovery time by bringing targeted blood flow to your most problematic areas. This service is available as a complementary add-on to any massage service that you book with me.
