Assemblyman Kevin Kiley
California Legislator proudly representing the 6th Assembly District
I enjoyed honoring the American River Bike Patrol for being named the finest bike patrol in the nation by the National Ski Patrol. Thank you for all that you do improve trail safety on the American River Parkway!
The student test scores released this week show a substantial decline in academic progress since 2019, with a 4% drop in students meeting English standards and a 7% drop in students meeting math standards. Our state implemented the longest school closures of any in the nation, and our kids paid the price. This will go down as one of the greatest failures of leadership in California history.
This week my colleagues and I called on the Legislature to return to session to address three major issues affecting Californians:
1. Pass legislation to suspend the gas tax and provide relief from the nation's highest gas prices
2. Restore penalties for retail theft and reclassify crimes like domestic violence as violent felonies
3. Take action to solve our homelessness crisis and ban encampments near schools and daycares
It's time for real solutions to address the critical challenges facing our state.
Today Governor Newsom announced that he will end the COVID-19 State of Emergency on February 28, 2023, nearly three full years after it was put in place. It is past time to end the State of Emergency and focus on the enormous hardships Californians are facing in their daily lives: soaring gas and grocery prices, surging crime, and a homelessness problem that gets worse by the day.
Gavin Newsom will end California’s COVID state of emergency after more than 2 years California Republicans have repeatedly urged Newsom to cancel the state of emergency, saying it’s an overreach of power.
Last month I had the pleasure of presenting a resolution to Tiffany Andrews honoring the service of her son, Marine Sergeant Tyler Andrews, at the Warfighter Overwatch Patriot’s Gala in Folsom. On August 26, 2021, Sergeant Andrews was the most critically wounded Marine in the su***de bombing attack at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan that killed 13 U.S. service members and wounded 18 Marines. To date, Sergeant Andrews has undergone 43 surgeries at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. I am thankful for his continued recovery and the work Warfighter Overwatch has done to support his family throughout the process. Our community is forever grateful for Sergeant Andrews’ dedication to duty and faithful service to his country.
Inflation was higher than expected in September at 8.2%. Meanwhile the Governor has proposed a new oil tax increase in December, which will further raise costs for consumers. This is the wrong solution for California.
US inflation rises more than expected in September Efforts to tame inflation in the US have pushed up the dollar and global borrowing costs.
For years freelancers have fought back against AB 5, California's infamous law passed in 2019 to restrict independent contracting and the right to earn a living. Californians across hundreds of professions lost their livelihoods when politicians put the needs of special interests above independent workers. We need to repeal AB 5 in California, not have it spread to the rest of the country.
California has a terrible labor law. The Biden administration wants to take it national Three years ago this month, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed California Assembly Bill 5 (AB5) into law, essentially outlawing freelance journalism and most other independent contracting. Opponen…
This week my colleagues and I sent a letter to Governor Newsom and legislative leadership calling on the following three actions to be taken immediately:
1. Call a special session to suspend the gas tax
2. Reject the proposed tax increase on oil producers
3. Audit where our gas tax dollars are being spent
Today California gas prices are $2.37 above the national average. We can't wait any longer to provide relief.
A new investigation by the New York Times reveals that at its current rate, California’s High Speed Rail project will cost $80 billion more taxpayer dollars than voters were initially promised and will not be completed this century. It’s time to end this boondoggle once and for all.
How California’s Bullet Train Went Off the Rails America’s first experiment with high-speed rail has become a multi-billion-dollar nightmare. Political compromises created a project so expensive that almost no one knows how it can be built as originally envisioned.
Today the average price of a gallon of gas in California is $6.39, $2.50 more than the national average and $1.11 more than it was just one month ago. Yet rather than calling a special session to suspend the gas tax and give California drivers immediate relief as I have called for, today the Governor decided to bring the Legislature back in December to raise taxes on oil producers. This will do nothing but increase costs on consumers who are already paying the highest costs in the nation.
Gov. Newsom to call special legislative session to impose windfall tax on oil companies Gov. Gavin Newsom will call state lawmakers back to Sacramento for a special session in response to rising gas prices.
After spending over $14 billion taxpayer dollars to address the issue, homelessness has grown 15% over the last 3 years. The Supermajority killed my request to audit all homelessness spending in California earlier this year, it’s time we revisit that immediately.
California's homeless population increased — again Despite billions being spent by the state, the California homeless population rose by 21,000 during the COVID pandemic.
In just the last three days California gas prices have jumped 38 cents and are inching closer to the state's record high of $6.46 set in June. Drivers are now paying over $6.18 per gallon, $2.40 more than the national average. This is the result of longstanding policy failures, compounded by the Governor and Legislature's refusal to suspend the gas tax as other states have.
Gas prices in California skyrocket overnight; largest increase in 7 years Sticker Shock. Just a day after Californians saw gas top $6 for a gallon of regular unleaded, gasoline prices made their largest jump in seven years overnight. According to AAA, the Los Angeles-Lon…
This week I sent State Superintendent Tony Thurmond a letter calling on him to immediately release the data he is withholding on student test scores. EdSource requested this data last week, but was told the release was delayed until an "undetermined date later this year." This is just the latest example of our elected officials putting politics over the health, education, and welfare of California students.
California drivers are now paying an average of $5.80 for gas, over $2.00 above the national average of $3.73. We are only 20 cents away from $6.00 per gallon and the increases do not appear to be slowing down. This is what happens when the Legislature places relief for the people of our state at the bottom of their priority list.
California gas prices skyrocketing again Gas prices in Southern California are soaring once again. Residents in the Golden State are now paying more than $2 above the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline, according t…

Mosquito Fire: All evacuation orders lifted for Placer, El Dorado counties All evacuation orders have been lifted on Wednesday for Placer County, allowing residents to return home as rain and cooler temperatures helped suppress the Mosquito Fire's activity and aided firefighters in their containment.
The cost of gas has risen to over $5.50 per gallon and California drivers are paying $1.84 more than the national average. Yet the Supermajority refuses to suspend the gas tax and is content to let prices keep moving towards $6.00 per gallon. Failed policies and misguided political priorities are making life more and more difficult for people in our state.
Rising gas prices getting closer to $6 across Southern California Gas prices in Southern California have been on a steady rise after easing up over the summer. Prices in California had reached a record high of $6.44 on June 14.

Mosquito Fire: Crews keep flames away from Foresthill; windy conditions expected again Flames from the Mosquito Fire moved dangerously close to the community of Foresthill in Placer County after a spot fire jumped the Middle Fork of the American River, officials said.
The Legislature had an opportunity to provide real relief to Californians by supporting my legislation to suspend the gas tax. That would have saved drivers over 50 cents per gallon. Instead, the Supermajority opted to create a do-nothing Select Committee as an attempt at political cover. Now gas prices are going back up and our residents are paying the price.
California gas prices are going up. But prices are falling across the US. What’s going on? Gasoline prices are plunging nationally — but not in California.
MOSQUITO FIRE UPDATE 9/12: The Mosquito Fire has now grown to at over 46,000 acres in Placer and El Dorado counties. It is currently 10% contained and continues to prompt evacuations. At the time of this update, there were 5,848 structures threatened and 2,397 fire personnel assigned to the blaze.

Mosquito Fire jumps American River into El Dorado County, threatens homes The wildfire that has expanded in size over the last several days in Placer County has jumped the Middle Fork of the American River into El Dorado County.
Our region is now facing rolling blackouts as a direct result of failed energy policies in California. The Governor and Legislature are asking its residents to turn off their lights after restricting reliable energy sources across the state. Meanwhile, they are banning gas powered cars when we can't even charge the few electric vehicles we have on our roads.
SMUD preparing for rolling blackouts as Sacramento hits record temps. Here’s how they’d work The utility company said it would “exhaust every avenue” before doing so on what could be Sacramento’s hottest day ever.
I am excited to name Adrian Blanco Jewelry as the 2022 Small Business of the Year for the Sixth Assembly District. Adrian doesn’t just own and operate an award-winning jewelry store, he is also one of the most active members of the Folsom community and regularly gives back by supporting local causes and nonprofits. His dedication to our region is unmatched and I am grateful to know him. Congratulations Adrian!
It has been one year since our community lost Marine Sergeant Nicole Gee in Afghanistan along with 12 other American troops. Today my prayers are with her family as we honor her life and sacrifice.
One year later: Remembering Roseville's Nicole Gee who was killed in Afghanistan bombing Warfighter Overwatch is hosting a tribute Friday from 5-6 p.m. at the Sutter Street Amphitheater in Folsom to honor the 13 fallen U.S. service members.
I'm thankful the Governor chose to veto SB 57, which would have legalized drug injection sites in California's major cities. It's time for the Legislature to stop pushing this dangerous legislation forward and start focusing on real solutions to address our state's growing drug crisis.
Bill legalizing drug injection sites vetoed by Calif. governor, who says they could bring "world of unintended consequences" Gavin Newsom says they could bring a "world of unintended consequences."
At the end of last year the American Academy of Pediatrics declared a national emergency on child and adolescent mental health. This is evidenced by soaring rates of depression and anxiety in our youth, as well as an increase in emergency room visits related to mental health. Chronic sadness is on the rise and the youth su***de rate in California have increased by a staggering 20 percent. These trends were all exacerbated by school closures and other restrictions that forced kids into social isolation. We must invest in helping them recover from the damage these policies caused, while also making sure that it never happens again.
Newsom funnels nearly $5 billion into mental health resources The funding comes after su***de rates among California kids jumped 20% between 2019 and 2020.
Californians could soon be facing blackouts after years of failed energy policies that decrease reliability and increase costs for consumers. Meanwhile, the Governor is trying to jam through aggressive new energy restrictions that would eliminate thousands of jobs, cost taxpayers $130 billion, and raise the median price of a home by $50,000.
Blackouts possible as Flex Alert issued for California on Wednesday The Flex Alert will be in place between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday
It has been one year since the devastating Caldor Fire tore through the Sierra and destroyed the community of Grizzly Flats. We must do better to protect Californians from future disasters by holding Cal Fire accountable. A recent report highlighted all the ways they are currently falling short:
◾️ Despite the state setting aside a record $1.5 billion for wildfire prevention, Cal Fire's forest management hiring remains stagnant
◾️ Cal Fire is struggling to track wildfire prevention projects that experts say are desperately needed to protect communities from destructive wildfires
◾️ The department still can't determine how many acres of work it completed and funded through grants in the fiscal year ending in June 2021
◾️ Cal Fire has taken years to implement laws passed by the state Legislature
◾️ For at least four years, Cal Fire has failed to send its annual report to the Legislature detailing the department's fire prevention efforts to help lawmakers understand the state's progress on protecting vulnerable communities
Cal Fire fumbles key responsibilities to prevent catastrophic wildfires despite historic budget A months-long investigation from The California Newsroom examined Cal Fire’s efforts to prevent catastrophic wildfires, ahead of what could be another devastating fire season.
The Governor has made yet another "major announcement," this time about the state's long term plan to solve our water crisis. It's great to hear him state his support for increasing water storage in California, something my colleagues and I have been saying for years, but these are empty words if they are not accompanied by policies that reduce the roadblocks keeping this from happening.
Newsom unveils long-term strategy to bolster California water supply Warning about climate change, Newsom sets targets for recycled water and expanded reservoirs. But details are scant and deadlines distant.
According to a scathing new report from the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office, the EDD "caused hardship for unemployed workers and their families" over the past two years. They failed to pay as much as $1 billion in legitimate claims, while sending the same amount in fraudulent claims to prison inmates and mischaracterizing the extent of these problems to the Legislature. This latest failure by the EDD demonstrates the need for more legislative oversight.
California unemployment department blasted for delays, improper denials The state’s Employment Development Department’s delays caused hardship for millions of unemployment workers, a new report from the state’s Legislative Analyst’s Office said.
Earlier this year the Assembly Public Safety Committee rejected a proposal to increase penalties on fentanyl. Instead, the Legislature is taking a different approach by approving legislation this week to legalize drug use at "safe" injection sites in some of California's major cities. I urge the Governor to veto this dangerous bill.
Los Angeles one step closer to allowing safe injection sites Three California cities - Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Oakland - could soon provide spaces where people can consumer pre-obtained drugs with provided clean needles. The bill is now headed to Gov. Newsom's desk for approval.
The Legislature reconvenes today after a month long recess. Yet while our leaders boast of a record budget surplus and billions in new spending, Californians are not seeing the results. That's why I am bringing back my proposal to audit all of our state's spending on homelessness, an issues that continues to grow the more that we spend.
Why is Newsom not doing anything with the record surplus? Kevin Kiley discusses. - SAN DIEGO (K**I) – California currently has a record $97.5 billion surplus but most of the state seem to be at a stand still. Forty percent of our nation's goods come through ports in California. Harmful policies like AB 5 are now threatening the entire American economy by taking 70,000 truckers off the roads. This will continue to drive up inflation and costs for all Californians.
