We are now accepting nominations for our 2024 Summer Mark Whisler Boards & Commissions Leadership Institute!

Deadline for applications is July 12th.

About BCLI:

The Mark Whisler Boards & Commissions Leadership Institute (BCLI) provides public policy training for our Sacramento area community advocates. It's time that neighborhood leaders have not just a voice, but a seat on the dais.

For our training institute, we seek out and recruit people from low-income communities and communities of color who have a proven track record of leadership as social justice advocates in their neighborhoods. They’re distinguished by a passion to change systems by learning the important aspects of public policy development from the inside. We deeply invest in each cohort through our 6-week BCLI fellowship, which teaches advocates how to understand complex and intersecting policy arenas, navigate the culture and language of commissions, and build effective relationships in and outside the commission.

Public policy topics covered by the BCLI:
Power, Privilege & Structural Racialization
Land Use and Affordable Housing
Robert's/Rosenberg's Rules of Order, Ethics & Storytelling
Health Equity & Environmental Justice
Education Equity
Transportation Justice
Workplace Equity/Labor 101

A Week Without Driving is October 2-8, 2023

What if taking the bus, riding a bike, walking or asking for rides weren’t a choice you could make, but a necessity?

What would it be like getting around without driving yourself?

The Week Without Driving Sacramento partners (Sacramento Transit Advocates and Riders STAR, Sacramento Transit Riders Union SacTRU, and Ridership for the Masses RFTM, with others to be added) has created a unique opportunity, the Ride
Along. This program pairs elected officials (or others who have stated their intent to run) in the Sacramento area with people who don’t drive, or usually don’t drive.

Though we are emphasizing people with disabilities (the program was started by Disability Rights Washington) and transit use, the persons paired can use transit, walk, and bicycle for a variety or reasons including low income.

We will offer the Ride Along to elected officials in mid-September, but are recruiting individuals who would like to be Ride Along partners from now through the Week Without Driving. You could do it once, or multiple times. The intent is
not to ‘educate’ the officials, though they may well need that, but to share the experience and thoughts, and then to jointly or individually write a story to be shared on the Week Without Driving website (https://weekwithoutdriving-sac.org).

If you are interested in joining, please contact Dan Allison,
[email protected], 775-997-4937 or Barbara Stanton, [email protected], 916-601-3641.

Our Director Tamie Dramer does a lot of things…and one of the important things she does is serve on the Board of Directors of the Sacramento Housing Alliance. We need you and or your organization to join us to fight for more and better housing solutions for the Sacramento Region. Please- if you are able, add your name to the list of members of this organization.

Sacramento Housing Alliance is the only policy organization focused solely in the Sacramento region advocating for more affordable homes and healthy inclusive communities and we need your help! Without members and donors, we can't continue to fight for justice in places like Elk Grove, or encourage public participation in housing elements, or ask city councils for more local housing funds! That's what we do each day and we need your support to continue.

Our homelessness and affordability crisis continues to grow and we need your voice and participation now more than ever. If you are not already a member, please consider visiting our website or the link below and become a member today!
