Journaling can be a powerful mindfulness tool, and a helpful way to sort out your ideas and goals into a manageable, useful record...kind of like cleaning out your mental closet. Here are some tips for to help get you started:

-Write without judgment; your journal is your safe space, so don't worry about perfection. Just let those thoughts spill out onto the page.

-Make it a habit. Find a time that suits you, whether it's first thing in the morning, during your lunch break, or before hitting the hay. Consistency is key!

-Need a little push? Look up some writing prompts to get those creative juices flowing. They're like little nudges to help you dive into your thoughts.

-Find a journaling buddy; having someone to share the journey with, whether in person or online, can make it way more fun and keep you both on track.

When using DBT, the goal is to find balance in our efforts to change things and accept the things we can't control. DBT will help you embrace the power of dialectics (for example, the need for acceptance and change) and learn skills like mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance. DBT offers concrete and specific skills for you to practice and implement across life.

DBT can help you create a “life worth living” by building your skills, brick by brick. Once you have mastered learning how to change your behaviors and emotions, you will reap powerful benefits—being able to replace your thinking patterns around misery and distress to find purpose.

Today, we observe National Chronic Disease Day.

Chronic diseases account for 7 out of the 10 leading causes of death in the United States. The purpose of today is to raise awareness about the necessity for access to preventive measures against chronic diseases and the importance of providing adequate support for individuals living with them.

One of the most impactful ways to assist those managing chronic diseases, as well as to prevent future cases, is by developing connections and offering mutual support. This entails extending a helping hand and seeking assistance to achieve health objectives, ensuring access to healthcare, nutritious meals, and enjoyable physical activity. It also involves creating resilient communities where friendship, presence, and interconnectedness flourish.

Consider how you can better connect with those around you, with the goal of supporting yourself and others as we avoid, or manage, chronic disease in our lives.

Worried about the impact of social media on your teen? It's a big deal these days, with lots of not-so-great stuff floating around. But hey, you're not powerless! Here are a few things you can do:

🤳Check out your own social media habits. Are you setting a good example? Maybe try cutting back on screen time and make it a family thing. Set some tech-free times for everyone, so your teen sees you walking the talk.

🛴Encourage other activities besides scrolling. Get your teen involved in real-life stuff—family outings, hanging out with friends face-to-face, you name it. Even just giving them space to chill with their buddies can pull them away from their screens.

🗣️Talk, and listen, to your teen. Seriously, communication is key. Ask them about what they're up to online without sounding like a detective. Banning stuff outright just makes them sneakier, so try to understand why they're drawn to social media and help them find a balance.

What are professional wellness initiatives?

Professional wellness initiatives are holistic approaches companies can take to employee wellbeing. They can include health support, such as offering health screenings, nutritional support, and exercise events. Beyond that, initiatives can include material support to improve work-life balance, courses to connect employees to training that can improve their lives, and a two-way communication about what employees need and employers can provide.

Professional wellness initiatives that focus on the wellbeing of your employees’ bodies, and minds, are shown to improve your employees’ lives, improving workplace morale, which then improves your bottom line.

Being creative with your friends or family is a fun way to both deepen your bonds with the community around you, and express yourself in a way that enhances your coping skills. Here are some benefits of creativity with your community:

🧠 Creative expression like painting or drawing, dancing, gardening, cooking or baking, sculpting, photography, and more, can connect you to the people around you, and can create more connections in your brain.

🎨 Creativity lets you be honest in ways that simply talking may not, tapping into feelings and allowing you to release them in a way that feels safe and healthy.

👐Creating with others can relieve loneliness, helping you feel less isolated and allowing you to be expressive and vulnerable around people you care about, in a way that may feel safer and more comfortable to you.

Incorporating mindfulness into your daily life doesn't require hours of meditation—it can be as simple as following these five steps, noticing the sensations in your body, or pausing to appreciate the beauty around you. With practice, mindfulness becomes a natural part of your being.

Becoming an advocate for your LGBTQ child is a journey of love, understanding, and unwavering support. It starts with listening openly and without judgment, allowing your child to express their identity authentically.

Educating yourself about LGBTQ issues, terminology, and rights empowers you to advocate effectively on behalf of your child. Embrace their journey with pride and stand up against discrimination and prejudice. Create a safe and inclusive environment at home and within your community, where your child can flourish and thrive.

By amplifying their voice, championing their rights, and being a fierce ally, you can make a profound difference in their lives and help pave the way for a more accepting and inclusive world.

As the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, marking the longest day of the year, we welcome the vibrant energy of the summer solstice. This celestial event not only signals the peak of the sun's power but also offers us a profound opportunity to nurture our own well-being through self-care practices.

Here are a few self-care rituals to consider incorporating into your summer solstice celebration:

🏝️Bask in Nature's Splendor: Step outside and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature. Whether it's a leisurely walk in the park, a hike through the woods, or simply lounging in your backyard, connecting with the natural world can be deeply rejuvenating.
🌅Practice Mindfulness: Set aside a few moments to quiet your mind and cultivate mindfulness. Whether through meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simply pausing to savor the present moment, mindfulness can help ground you in the here and now, fostering a sense of inner peace and tranquility.
🌊Nourish Your Body: Treat yourself to nourishing foods that fuel your body and uplift your spirits. Indulge in seasonal fruits and vegetables, hydrate with refreshing beverages, and savor the flavors of summer with light and wholesome meals.
☀️Soak Up the Sun: Take advantage of the sun's nourishing rays by spending time outdoors and soaking up some vitamin D. Whether it's practicing yoga in the sunshine, lounging by the pool, or enjoying a picnic in the park, let the warmth of the sun invigorate your body and soul.
🌸Cultivate Joy: Engage in activities that bring you joy and uplift your spirits. Whether it's dancing to your favorite music, painting a beautiful landscape, or simply spending quality time with loved ones, prioritize activities that nourish your soul and ignite your passion.

As we celebrate the summer solstice and embrace the abundant energy of the sun, let us also remember to honor and care for ourselves. By prioritizing self-care, we can cultivate a deeper sense of well-being, allowing us to shine brightly and radiate positivity in all that we do. Happy solstice, and may your summer be filled with warmth, light, and boundless joy.

Meet Rozhia Taylor, APCC, a dedicated therapist with a passion for helping individuals navigate life's challenges and transitions. With a diverse background spanning both nonprofit work and therapeutic practice, Rozhia brings a wealth of experience to her clients' journeys. Specializing in supporting individuals from pre-teens to adults, Rozhia is particularly adept at addressing concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and loss.

"Therapy with me is not the cookie-cutter experience you may have had in the past. In this room, I show up in a real and authentic way to help you do the work of uncovering what makes you feel whole. My clients look to me as someone to help them debunk the lies they believe about themselves, rewrite their stories, find hope in the midst of loss & discover a new perspective.

As a Christian woman, I can provide counseling that includes a biblical perspective. As the spouse of a musician, I’m familiar with the challenges of industry professionals. And as someone with an open mind, I can hold space for the many identities and backgrounds that you hold as well." - Rozhia Taylor

The answer is to this question is simple, your body needs both mental health and physical health to function properly and let you live a happy and healthy life. If you are struggling in one area, you may choose to focus on one over the other and that is okay. Just remember the influence they have on each other and how important it is to keep up with your health both mentally and physically.

05/22/2024

Mental wellbeing is tied closely to having healthy relationships in your life. From relationships with romantic partners, to family, to friends, to ourselves, having the courage and conviction to communicate honestly, enforce boundaries, and look for healthier, more fulfilling options, can be key to encouraging improved mental wellbeing for ourselves.

Unhealthy relationships can look different to everyone, from patterns and dynamics that are just a poor fit between yourself and another person, to the extremes of abuse. Taking the time to reflect on how this kind of unhealthy relationship is impacting your life, and your mental wellbeing, can be a good first step toward making the changes necessary to remove stressful, unsupportive, and unhealthy relationships from your life.

If you're struggling in the relationships in your life, consider coming in to therapy, to talk about how you contribute to the conflict, and how you can be a part of the solution.

We're highlighting Mental Health Awareness Week this week.

Mental health issues are common, though it can feel deeply isolating and lonely to experience them. Connection and community are key parts of managing a mental health condition.

Reach out to those around you that may be struggling, share your own experiences, and try to contribute to an open dialogue about mental health with those around you.

It can make all the difference to someone to hear “I’ve been there.”
