"Make Jeeps Serviceable Again"

Ever put together a build and find out its not quite what you had in mind? That's OK, we can handle it.

We moved the rear lower links and fabbed up an new transmission crossmember on this YJ so that servicing the transfer case and other components was easier and more efficient. We retained proper link separation with a custom lower link mount.

Have some changes you want made on your rigg? Call or email us today to get on our schedule!

Fyi, The sunset bill HB 4515 has been signed into law as Public Act 217 of 2023.
Makes no changes to fee structures or any other part of P.A.451 other than remove the sunset.

What does this mean? It means that the current ORV Permit structure will continue to be in place to fund things like trail maintenance and development and restoration. It also removed the 10 year sunset clause so we don’t have to do this every 10 years and now focus more on ammending / adjusting legislation and funding to better serve the evolving and growing OffRoad Community. Rest assured GLFWDA is actively involved in those efforts already and tonight a few of us are meeting as part of the MMRC that Tom spoke about at the quarterly meeting last Saturday.

In part, our board here at GLFWDA are responsible to have made this happen along with other leaders in the OffRoad community and clubs who personally developed relationships with legislatures in both the house and senate.

Do you know how the ORV Permit moneys are allocated? From a big picture point of view here it is:

Who's ready for PRI?

Dale, Kyle and Justin will be out of the shop Thursday afternoon through the weekend as we attend PRI to continue staying up to date on the latest products and materials for your offroad needs.

11/24/2023

We take product testing as serious as it gets.

The shop truck got some new fun marks in Oklahoma last week. The quality of parts and fabrication on the LJ kept it going all weekend after this little tumble and Dale was fine too.

If you're looking for the right parts for your rig give us a call or a message. We know what works 💪

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Ironman Offroad

Kyle's 1980 J10 sports a 410 c.i AMC with Holley fuel injection and a newly added 4" lift from BJs Offroad. Kyle topped off the lift kit with a set of 17" Raceline Wheels Rockcrushers and wrapped them in a set of 295/70/R17 Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels Baja Boss A/T

All parts including the wheels and tires are sold here at Ironman.

A comment to one of our posts about not using tow-balls as an attachment point for OFF-ROAD RECOVERIES, especially KINETIC recoveries, called for a deeper reply. NOTE: This is not about that Class 5 hitch on your dually truck.

In his comment, John stated the following: "I'd have to see it to believe it. Hung trucks by the ball." BTW: I appreciate that he was not rude but only questioned the information I provided.

My answer:
(Warning: Math and geek stuff follows. 😲 )
**************
Just hanging a truck by the ball would only apply the static weight of the truck to it. However, a (kinetic) snatch-type recovery can put many times the weight of the truck on the ball (or whatever it is attached to). Figuring the forces involved in a rolling (kinetic) recovery is a multiplication problem, so it can far exceed the weight of the vehicle itself: kinetic energy (KE) is equal to half of an object's mass (1/2*m) multiplied by the velocity squared.

So, if you have an 8000-pound truck pulling out another bogged truck using a rolling recovery, and said truck accelerated to 10mph, the force applied (kinetic energy) to the ball and hitch of the bogged rig when the slack in the strap/chain/cable comes to an end, will be around 36259 Joules or 26,743 foot-pounds of energy, though only for a moment (shock load). But that moment is enough to turn that tow-ball into a cannonball. (Maybe it makes a little more sense why we carry 30,000+ pound recovery straps and shackles, too, don't you think?)

(**NOTE: If that same truck did not exceed 5 mph, the kinetic energy involved drops considerably to a more reasonable 6886 pounds of force. So, 26,743 pounds at 10mph or 6886 pounds of energy at 5 mph. That's a BIG difference. Now imagine what happens when their drunk buddy floors it. 😲 This is why so many recommend slow speeds for such recoveries.)

Keep in mind this page and this post are about off-roading, and few true off-road rigs have more than a Class III receiver. So, they generally have a ball and hitch rated at 6000 pounds or less. (**of course, some of the big mud trucks (not what we talk about here) will have Class IV hitches capable of 39K loads; they still shouldn't use a tow-ball for kinetic recovery of a like-sized or heavier vehicle, IMHO.) While a 39,000 lbs Class IV tow-ball is certainly capable of pulling out a bogged 5500 lbs Wrangler, using it on another large (10K?) truck raises the stakes fast in a kinetic recovery situation.

Again, those bug trucks are not what I am talking about. I am speaking about the Class III, 3,500 lbs to 6000 lbs tow balls that are common on our 4x4 off-road rigs, with hitches and balls that can be rated as low as 3,500 lbs, and 2" tow balls rated at only 2,000 lbs are commonly sold. This is where the REAL danger starts.

BTW: The point of posts like this is so you DON'T have to watch a friend die ("see it to believe it" as he put it) to learn about proper recovery techniques.
*****************

**Hold on tight: There seem to be a lot of people who have a very close personal attachment (so to speak) to their tow-balls, and they don't take kindly to anyone disparaging them by saying they are not made to something totally different than towing (even though the manufacturers all say that too). Simply using a $40 to $150 shackle block is seemingly WAY, WAY too difficult for them. haha!
