Applications to serve on the 2024-2026 Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council are open.

Apply at: https://forms.gle/TT7Quierj6KZqkwPA.

What is SYLC?
Established in 2015, the Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council (SYLC) is a statewide leadership opportunity for 4-H youth.

SYLC members serve as representatives of the Michigan 4-H program, promoting 4-H through state and local activities, and can provide youth voice and perspective on the development of 4-H programs and curricula.

Who is eligible?
Any 4-H participant, age 15-19 by January 1, 2025, can apply for a council position. They must be currently enrolled in a 4-H program, in good standing in their local 4-H club or unit and have completed at least the previous year of 4-H work. Youth are selected for the council by application and interview with a state committee of MSU Extension staff.

How long is one term on SYLC?
SYLC members serve a two-year term. After the successful completion of a two-year term, SYLC members are eligible to apply to serve as a peer advisor for incoming council members.

When and where do they meet?
The council meets monthly through Zoom online video conferencing and holds at least two in-person meetings in conjunction with other state 4-H events: one in the fall at the start of their term, and the other at 4-H Exploration Days (MSU campus, June).

Why would youth be interested in SYLC?
SYLC members receive training in public speaking, advocacy, communication and leadership skills. SYLC is Michigan’s highest youth leadership opportunity and is a goal that older youth can aspire toward. SYLC members get to broaden their network and expand their knowledge of 4-H programs beyond their counties.

On Friday, August 16, there will be public release events, where attendees have the opportunity to release this pre-historic fish into the Saginaw Bay Watershed. +100 hatchery-raised Lake Sturgeon will be released into each tributary of the Saginaw Bay Watershed (Cass, Flint, Shiawassee, and Tittabawassee rivers). We hope you can join!

The Lake Sturgeon released in August come from the Black River in Cheboygan County. Michigan State University Department of Fisheries & Wildlife and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources reared the fish at the Black Lake Streamside Rearing Facility.

Public release events on Aug. 16 include:

· 11 a.m., Tittabawassee River, held at the Bob G. Caldwell Municipal Boat Launch in Midland, MI, and hosted by the Chippewa Nature Center. For more information, contact Jennifer Kirts at [email protected].

· Noon, Shiawassee River, at Cole Park in Chesaning, MI, and hosted by the Friends of the Shiawassee River. For more information, contact Liz Roxberry at [email protected].

· 1:30 p.m., Flint River, at Paddlers’ Landings (Mott Park Recreation Area) in Flint, MI, and hosted by the Flint River Watershed Coalition. For more information, contact Nancy Edwards at [email protected].

· 2 p.m., Cass River, at the parking lot at the Gunzenhausen Walkway in Frankenmuth, MI, and hosted by the City of Frankenmuth. For more information, contact Matt Bierlein at [email protected].

Lake Sturgeon are a unique Great Lakes species. They can grow up to 7 feet long and can weigh up to 300 pounds. The slow-maturing fish do not begin reproducing until they are 15-20 years old. Once abundant in many Michigan lakes and rivers, Lake Sturgeon were nearly eradicated due to overfishing and habitat loss, particularly the destruction of rocky reefs in rivers that sturgeon and other native fish species use for spawning. Many partnerships and projects are working to restore sturgeon to a self-sustaining level in Michigan. This work includes restoring sturgeon habitat, reintroducing sturgeon into their native ranges, and raising awareness and appreciation for this unique species.

Learn more about the lake sturgeon restoration efforts on the Saginaw Bay Sturgeon website (www.saginawbaysturgeon.org).

If you have general release event questions, please contact: Meaghan Gass, Michigan Sea Grant Extension Educator, [email protected], 989-318-3116.
