In the event of your death, who is in charge of making arrangements for the disposition of your body? Unless previously specified, your legal next-of-kin will have the responsibility and authority to make all decisions for you concerning burial and cremation, including who receives your cremated remains.

Who is your legal next-of-kin? Typically, this task falls to your legal spouse, your children (all of whom have equal rights), or your parents.

To ensure consumer protection, the FTC requires every funeral home in the country to utilize a third party to hold the funds from a pre-plan in an insurance policy or a trust account. This third party holds the funds until the time of death and pays the funeral home when services are rendered. The funeral home does not own your policy.
