People enter therapy because they realize they are dealing with a difficult situation and recognize they need help to make things better. They want their marriage or relationship to become stronger and last. That’s why it can be a little surprising that in some cases, separation may be a useful tool.

Separation is Like a Sprained Ankle There are times when physical separation may be needed, or possibly an emotional or sexual separation to allow relationships to repair.

In recovery, you’ll often have two types of people around you: low-support people and high-support people. Low-support people will usually tell you what they think you should or shouldn’t be doing. In the end, they usually just end up cultivating pain and drama. High-support people are those who will be by your side and will help you with the work you are doing - especially when it is difficult or painful. Do your best to seek out high-support people who will stretch with you and help you get where you want to be.
