In the past 6 months over 300 people have come to the NWMGS to research their ancestors and find our more about their family and the history of St. While we are based in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, we serve the entire 9 county region that comprises the Platte Purchase. We gladly accept donations of family files

Bike trail runs through century-old family cemetery A local family is speaking out after they learned a popular bike trail in St. Joseph goes right through their family's century-old cemetery.
The Finding Your Roots Discussion Group scheduled for today, May 23, is canceled. The electricity went out at the library around 6:30 and we had to close the library early.

A tradition that has all but disappeared . . .
A vintage advertisement for the Lane Cedar Hope Chest. These were manufactured in large quantities by The Lane Company, of Altavista, Virginia. The text of the ad states that more than 200 styles were available and priced from $15.50 and up. The cedar hope chest pictured at the top of the ad is advertised as a Valentines Special for only $27.95. This vintage ad was published in February, 1942, just as the American involvement in World War Two was getting underway.

This date was originally celebrated as Armistice Day which marked the formal end of major hostilities in World War I which occurred "...at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, 1918". In 1954, this date also became officially known as Veterans Day.
