Thank you & for the amazing feature on our Pozole Rojo for Dia de Mu***os 💀
And for the capturing it so perfectly 🤍

“Alejandro Victoria was never afraid of ghosts as a child. "My mom would say, 'Don't be scared of the dead people; the dead people are your friends or family, they were your neighbors or your grandpa or your uncle. They're not trying to hurt you. They're trying to come back and, like, hang out with you.'"

Which is why Victoria was always excited about Dia de Mu***os, or Day of the Dead, the Mexican holiday that invites departed ancestors' souls back for a visit. One direct line to those ancestors? Food.

"The kinds of things that would appear after the harvest, you're bringing back what your family loved. You put it on the ofrenda, but when you cook tamales for your relatives that pass, you eat some, too."

To celebrate Dia de Mu***os (Nov. 1 and 2), Victoria, the chef/owner of Nico's Tacos' two locations, has put together a Mu***os Menu with dishes that are traditionally eaten on the holiday. One can't-miss dish from that menu is the pozole rojo, a red chile stew of braised pork and giant kernels of heirloom corn in a deep broth. The platter comes with a variety of garnishes (a sq**rt of lime is essential) and a tostada piled high with beans ($14). It's the food of the ancestors.

Another must-have is the turkey tamale, with a smoky, rich chocolate mole ($5 each). A seasonal dish that's also eaten on the holiday, the supremely comforting turkey tamales will be available all fall.

The Mu***os Menu is offered at both locations through next week. On Oct. 29, the restaurants will celebrate with live music, face painting and tarot readings.”(Sharyn Jackson)

Muchas Gracias for shining a light on this beautiful tradition in our culture 🇲🇽

In addition to the above items listed, our Mu***os Menu also includes Chiles en Nogada & our Chamorro en chile guaje.

Join us this Saturday at our Mpls or St Paul location for our Dia de los Mu***os events

Once a year, our departed come back to celebrate with us. Join us for this symbolic holiday originating in our native Mexico. Live music, sugar skull face painting, creation station, Mu***os menu, Mezcal flights, & this year, an ofrenda!

Did you know:
Dia de los Mu***os has its origins in the rituals practiced by the indigenous peoples of the Americas (Mexico being the birthplace). Its precedents date back to more than 3000 years ago when the Olmecs and subsequent Toltecs, Mixtecs, Zapotecs, Maya, and Aztecs honored death in the cycle of life.

Hispanic Heritage Month and the Need Today For Immigration Reform

Minnesota businesses, faith, and civic organizations are celebrating Hispanic heritage month and we at Nicos Taco Bar welcome you to join us on September 16th. Why does Hispanic Heritage Month begin in mid-September? It’s a story of liberation that begins with a church bell ringing, the release of political prisoners, and a struggle that gave birth to the first republics in Latin America.

On Sept 15, 1810, in Dolores Mexico, a church bell rang late at night to call the people together. By 2 am on the 16th hundreds gathered, including released political organizers. The speech Father Hidalgo gave then launched a revolution that lead directly to the establishment of the republics of Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Just as in 1776, in 1810, the people resented a government they did not elect. Also, like in 1776, it took cooperation and support from all sectors of society to make democracy possible.

Hispanic Heritage Month is also a good time to remember that 11 million undocumented workers need a Pathway to Dignity or citizenship; and that elections are key to settling differences in a democracy. The profits from underpaying these workers drive migration. Yet the political blame, enforcement, penalties, and laws don’t focus on the profiteers, they focus on exploited migrants. This enables profiteering and is also unfair. Our fundraiser for immigration reform on the 16th is an example of how other faith, business, and civic organizations can counter that politic, advance democracy, and help things progress.

Have you tried our elote? A menu favorite since opening our doors almost 9 years ago.
Did you know: the highlands of Southern Mexico is believed to be the birthplace of elote, where indigenous tribes cultivated and selectively bred this beautiful vegetable.
And remains a sacred component in the cuisine of its birthplace 🇲🇽

Mezcal is an incredibly diverse category of spirit, it can be made from dozens of varietals of agave, each one affected by climate, terroir, mash and distillation style.

This mezcal expression from
Xicaru is made with 100%
Espadin Maguey (agave) and
distilled with roasted chicken
breast. seasoned mole spices.
The result is an incredibly clean spirit that carries the salinity and peppered spice from the distillation process. The breasts are hung in the distillation pot and as the mash heats, the vapors rise and condense on the
meat creating an incredibly
unique and exciting spirit. Best enjoved with fresh fruit (I like orange) and some spiced salt, such as Tajin or sal de gusano.
Salud! —
